Horner geen fan van maximale stintlengte: "Maakt het voorspelbaar"

Autosportfederatie FIA nam anderhalve week geleden in Qatar een drastisch besluit. Vanwege problemen met de banden, werd er besloten om een verplichte stintlengte in te voeren. Niet iedereen was hier blij mee en Christian Horner hoopt dat het niet nog een keertje voorkomt, hij vindt het te voorspelbaar.

In Qatar ging het veelvuldig om de banden van Pirelli. De bandenleverancier zag dat er scheurtjes in het rubber zaten en daarom werd er een noodoplossing ingevoerd. Om gevaarlijke situaties te voorkomen werd de baan aangepast en werd er een maximale stintlengte ingevoerd. Het zorgde voor een grote hoeveelheid pitstops en de fans genoten hier van. De teams vonden het echter iets minder leuk, de strategische plannen konden namelijk de prullenbak in.

Vrijheid

De vastgestelde stintlengte zorgde voor veel spektakel in de pitlane, maar Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner was er geen fan van. Aan Motorsport.com laat hij weten dat hij hoopt dat het geen vaste regel wordt: "Je moet ons de vrijheid geven, dat zorgt voor creativiteit. Verplichte pitstops? Dat heeft gevolgen voor het einde van de kwalificatie en hoeveel rondjes je dan rijdt om de banden te sparen voor de race. Dat lijkt mij niet logisch. Je wil de race zo snel mogelijk afwerken, dat is hoe het moet zijn."

Voorspelbaar

Horner snapt dat deze maatregel in Qatar werd genomen vanwege de veiligheid van de coureurs. Toch hoopt hij dat het niet nog een keer gaat gebeuren: "Het maakte het veel voorspelbaarder omdat je wist wat de maximale stintlengte van alle auto's was. Voor ons draaide het om het managen van het risico en de kans op een Safety Car in de laatste ronde. Daarom reden we met een allesbehalve optimale strategie om ervoor te zorgen dat we de marge hadden in het geval dat de coureurs achter ons een gratis pitstop zouden krijgen."

      Zeker niet in Austin met maar één VT en al die hobbels, waardoor ze de wagen weer hoger af moeten stellen, net zoals in Singapore.

      Ik verwacht minder problemen voor RBR dan in Singapore. Hogere snelheden, snelle bochtencombinaties en zwaar voor de banden. Past in het straatje van de RB19.

      Na de bevalling van 1 van mijn kids moest mijn meis naar het ziekenhuis om wat steekjes te zetten. Zag er bizar uit wat die dokter met draad en scharen aan het doen was. De scharen en naalden klikten er op los alsof het die razor figuur uit die horror film was.
      Hoor ik mijn meis vragen: "Bent U aan het kantklossen, dokter?"
      ....
      Ik nam het me toen voor.... NOOIT! NEE NOOIT VAN MIJN LEVEN! IK DOE DAT NOOIT!

      VOOR MIJ GEEN KANTKLOSSEN. Ook niet als ik vol ben gegoten met tripels of me de grootste voorraad trippels ever wordt geboden.
