Jos Verstappen ziet geen andere Max: "Dezelfde als drie jaar geleden"

Max Verstappen verschijnt dit weekend in Austin aan de start als een drievoudig wereldkampioen. De Nederlander pakte zijn derde wereldtitel twee weken geleden in Qatar. Veel kenners zijn van mening dat Verstappen een andere coureur is geworden in de afgelopen paar jaren, maar zijn vader heeft een andere mening.

Verstappen is bezig met een extreem sterk seizoen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Hij heeft slechts drie Grands Prix niet gewonnen en alleen in Singapore stond hij niet op het podium. De Red Bull-coureur verkeerde in absolute topvorm en hij profiteerde daarnaast ook van de tegenvallende prestaties van zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez. Volgens kenners is Verstappen in de afgelopen jaren volwassener geworden en dat zien ze ook terug in zijn rijstijl.

Verstappens vader Jos Verstappen heeft echter een andere mening. De voormalig Formule 1-coureur is van mening dat de zaakjes iets anders in elkaar steken. In gesprek met Autosport legt hij zijn standpunt uit: "Ik denk dat het dezelfde Max is als drie, vier jaar geleden. Het enige verschil is dat hij nu een fantastische auto heeft en dat hij de mensen kent waarmee hij werkt. Ik denk dat het daardoor makkelijker lijkt. Toch moet je er elk weekend zijn en de details maken dan het grote verschil."

  Ik zie toch een andere Max dan 3 jaar geleden. Hij is meer volwassen en neemt minder risico bij de start omdat hij weet dat het later toch wel goed komt.

Als we Eddie Jordan mogen geloven, ziet het er niet best uit voor de concurrentie van Red Bull Racing.
Het Britse team gesponsord door de Oostenrijkse energiedrankenleverancier won de laatste twee jaar de constructeurstitel, terwijl in 2021 ternauwernood werd verloren van Mercedes.
In de Formula For Success-podcast liet de oud-teambaas van het team dat zijn achternaam droeg weten dat hij onlangs op pad was met Adrian Newey, de Chief Technical Officer van Red Bull.
Die zei op zijn beurt tegen Jordan voor volgend jaar geen concurrentie te verwachten van Mercedes. "Adrian zei tegen mij: 'Het maakt me niks uit wat voor motor Mercedes erin gaat leggen, hun auto is qua aerodynamica niet van een zodanig niveau dat de coureurs hem aan de praat kunnen krijgen, zowel George als Lewis gaat dat niet lukken. En al zeker niet op het niveau waarop Max Verstappen onze Red Bull-bolide over het circuit jaagt', voegde hij eraan toe."
Dat is niet alles, zo zegt Jordan. "Adrian vertelde me dat de evolutie van de Red Bull op dit moment voor 2024 zo verschrikkelijk groot is, dat het zeer lastig wordt voor welk team dan ook om het gat te dichten."

Jordan waarschuwt de Formule 1-fans dan ook. "Bereid jezelf alsjeblieft voor: of op een saaie tijd, of op een geweldige tijd. Dat hangt af van of je Red Bull-fan bent - en Max-fan - of niet."

  Je kunt alleen naar je eigen auto kijken. Niemand weet van een ander hoe groot de sprong is van anderen in 2024. Als je ziet dat McLaren met enkele updates een compleet andere auto heeft dan de eerste helft van het seizoen, laat staan met het doorontwikkelen in de winter.
  
  Natuurlijk is het lastig voor de andere teams, omdat de regels bijna niet veranderen, maar toch.
