Perez ziet Ricciardo voor zich staan: "Hij heeft het geweldig gedaan"

Sergio Perez start zijn thuisrace vandaag vanaf de vijfde plaats. Hij is daarmee de derde Red Bull-coureur op de grid, want AlphaTauri-coureur Daniel Ricciardo kwalificeerde zich als vierde. Perez haalt zijn schouders er over op en hij vreest nog niet voor zijn zitje.

Perez werd tijdens de kwalificatie toegejuicht door tienduizenden landgenoten op de tribunes rondom het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. De Mexicaan had het lastig en hij kon de Ferrari's en zijn Red Bull-teamgenoot Max Verstappen niet bijhouden in het beslissende gedeelte van de kwalificatie. Maar, niemand had rekening gehouden met Daniel Ricciardo. De Australiër rijdt voor Red Bulls zusterteam AlphaTauri en hij wordt nadrukkelijk in verband gebracht met het zitje van Perez.

Banden

Perez baalde vooral van het feit dat zijn strategie in de kwalificatie niet goed uitpakte. De Mexicaanse Red Bull-coureur legt zich erbij neer en hij spreekt zich uit tegenover de internationale media: "Het is wat het is. We wisten in Q3 niet lekker door te pakken. We verloren in Q2 al een setje banden, terwijl dat eigenlijk niet nodig was. Je weet dat alleen pas als het al te laat is. Dat heeft ons alleen wel pijn gedaan. Met verschillen van één of twee tienden maakt dat het leven lastiger."

Ricciardo

De vijfde tijd is echter geen rampzalig resultaat, Perez heeft wel slechtere kwalificaties gereden in het huidige seizoen. De Mexicaan start alleen wel achter Ricciardo en dat zorgt voor de nodige verhalen. Perez blijft ook hier rustig: "Daniel heeft het geweldig gedaan en ik bovendien dat hij niet de enige coureur is die aast op mijn zitje. Een heleboel coureurs zouden mijn zitje heel graag overnemen. Als ze dat zitje op een gegeven moment verdienen, dan ben ik blij voor ze."

Het komt hier aan op de motor en de mechanische grip. Motor RBR = motor AT. En wellicht is de mechanische grip behoorlijk vergelijkbaar met de laatste updates van AT.
Hoe dan ook heeft Ricciardo een heel sterke Q3 gereden met de AT. Het gat met de coureurs voor hem is gering.

  Volslagen absurditeit dat Ricciardo zo ver vooraan staat. Zo'n plek waar Albon ook waanzinnig mee had kunnen verrassen.
  Enigste verklaring is dat Ricciardo het deed op z'n routine.
  
  Maar vechten met Mercedes en McLaren ? En met Perez ? Geen schijn van kans.
  Interessant wordt wel hoe moeilijk/makkelijk hij het Perez kan maken.

Perez zijn vrouw (25 jaar jong) is ook dit weekend aanwezig met haar vier kinderen.
Ze hebben de naam van hun vierde kind, een meisje, nog steeds niet bekend gemaakt.

Wel interessant om te kijken hoe Red Bull de mogelijke dynamiek tussen drie van haar vier auto's gaat managen, zeker nu -mede in verband met de huidige dominantie- de (terechte) kritiek op de constructie met twee samenwerkende teams aanzwelt.
