Norris zag sprintpole niet aankomen: "Voelde als een slecht rondje"

Niet Max Verstappen, maar Lando Norris start de sprintrace in Brazilië straks vanaf de eerste plaats. De Britse McLaren-coureur hoopte in de kwalificatie al op pole, maar dit is voor hem ook geen probleem. Norris had de sprintpole echter niet zien aankomen, hij vond dat het beter kon.

Het was geen verrassing dat de pace van de McLarens goed was in Brazilië. Tijdens de kwalificatie zagen ze er gisteren ook al snel uit, maar door het noodweer konden ze geen snelle tijden neerzetten. Nu was alles dus anders en wist Norris de snelste tijd te noteren. Ondanks een paar kleine momentjes in zijn snelle ronde, was hij dus wel de snelste. Hij hield de snelle Red Bulls van Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez achter zich.

Slecht rondje

Norris reageerde enigszins verrast toen zijn engineer hem liet weten dat hij de snelste tijd had genoteerd. De Britse coureur sprak zich daarna eerlijk uit bij interviewster van dienst Naomi Schiff: "Het is een geweldige dag. Om eerlijk te zijn voelde dit als één van de slechtste rondjes die ik heb gereden, dus ik ben een beetje verrast. Maar, die is wel een leuke verrassing. Ik denk dat we wel wat goed hebben gemaakt voor gisteren. Het is mijn eerste pole in lange tijd dus ik ben blij."

Red Bull

Door zijn pole geldt Norris gelijk ook als één van de favorieten voor de zege in de sprintrace van later vandaag. De Brit wil echter niet te vroeg juichen: "Ik heb geen idee hoe goed we zijn. De pace was het hele weekend al goed, De auto voelt sterk aan. We gaan de juiste richting op. Het is zwaar, want de Red Bulls en Max zijn altijd snel. Het wordt geen makkelijke race, maar de pace is sterk. Als er een kans is, dan pak ik die."

  hij was ook gewoon blij met de pole en zei dat het al even geleden was dat ie op pole stond. Doet m dus zeker wel wat.

  dat is wat anders. Maar het is er nu eenmaal en dan ben je natuurlijk gewoon blij met een pole. Ze hebben er ook een paar setjes banden voor opgeofferd dus dat ze alleen met morgen bezig zouden zijn klopt dan al niet meer. Natuurlijk blijft dat het belangrijkste maar reken maar dat iemand die nog nooit een race gewonnen heeft ook heel blij is met een sprintoverwinning.

zn bochten 2 en 3 in de polelap waren nog slechter dan die van Ocon. Gelukkig zat er geen Alonso aan de buitenkant

Alle coureurs reden in de vermaledijde sprint shootout hun slechtste rondje, alleen Sargeant steeg boven zichzelf uit en zat op minder dan één tiende van Albon.
