Verstappen laat Marko juichen: "Hij heeft niet sneller gereden dan nodig was"

Max Verstappen won vandaag de sprintrace in Brazilië op een vrije eenvoudige manier. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur reed met gemak weg bij Lando Norris en daarna kwam zijn zege niet in gevaar. Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko is enorm onder de indruk van Verstappen.

Verstappen startte de sprintrace op de tweede plaats achter Norris. Bij de start leek de Brit iets beter weg te komen, maar Verstappen gaf niet op. Hij had de leiding alsnog in handen bij het ingaan van de eerste bocht en daarna zag hij Norris alleen nog maar in zijn spiegels en op de grote schermen naast de baan. Verstappen schreef de sprint uiteindelijk op zijn naam met een voorsprong van dik vier seconden op Norris.

Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko was enorm trots op Verstappen. De Oostenrijker genoot van de machtige wedstrijd van Verstappen en dat legde hij uit aan de Duitse tak van Sky Sports: "Al in de eerste bocht lag Max aan de leiding en daarna heeft hij ongelooflijk goed zijn banden gemanaged. Hij heeft op geen enkel moment sneller gereden dan nodig was. Zodra Lando in de buurt van de DRS kwam, wist Max er direct een halve seconde bovenop te leggen. Aan het einde van de race reed hij was sneller en daardoor zijn we optimistisch voor de zondag."

Verstappen voerde tijdens de sprintrace weer een paar discussies met zijn engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. Marko wist precies waar dit over ging en hij legde ook dit na afloop uit: "Er werd gesproken over de plekken waarop hij wat meer zou kunnen pushen. In de snelle bochten, of in de langzamer bochten? Toen we naar de banden keken, besloten we om in de snelle bochten wat meer snelheid mee te nemen."

  Na het behalen van de vermaledijde sprintzege juichte Max veel meer ingetogen, wat weer alles zegt over hoe belangrijk hij dat vond...

  Lando dacht dat niet, maar ik snap waarom je dat denkt. Lando had het over “meer power” hebben. Hij had het over de start, waarbij hij uitlegt dat de initiële start en de afgifte van de power in de fase daarna dmv instellingen aangepast kunnen worden. Ze waren blijkbaar conservatiever geweest dan volgens Lando nodig was. Hierdoor lag Max aan de leiding en niet Lando.
  
  Hij laat mijns inziens daarna wel in het midden of hij Max dan voor had kunnen blijven.
