Red Bull-bolides liepen geen schade op bij putdeksel-incident

Het raceweekend in Las Vegas is momenteel één grote chaos. De eerste vrije training werd na een handvol minuten afgelast nadat er meerdere auto's schade opliepen door een loszittend frame van een putdeksel. Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner laat weten dat de auto's van zijn coureurs in orde zijn.

De eerste vrije training werd afgelast nadat Carlos Sainz en Esteban Ocon over het frame van een putdeksel reden. Sainz viel direct stil op The Strip en de FIA besloot alle putdeksels te gaan controleren. Er lag zeer veel debri op de baan, dit was overigens al het geval voordat Sainz over de put reed. Er hing al een gele vlag op het moment dat de Spanjaard over de putdeksel heen knalde.

Red Bull

Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner laat in ieder geval weten dat de auto's van Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez geen schade hebben. In gesprek met Sky Sports legt Horner de situatie uit: "Alles bij ons is in orde. Van wat ik heb begrepen hebben de Alpines schade opgelopen en ik heb ook met Vasseur besproken. Hij vertelde mij dat de schade aan de Ferrari van Carlos zeer groot is."

Flexibel

De tweede vrije training werd uitgesteld en het is nog maar de vraag wanneer deze wordt verreden. In Las Vegas is het inmiddels nacht en Horner laat weten dat men niet moet klagen: "We moeten flexibel zijn. Het is echt enorm jammer voor alle fans op de tribunes die graag auto's hadden willen zien rijden. De veiligheid moet echter altijd voorop staan. We moeten het juiste doen en hopelijk duurt dit allemaal niet te lang."

  Ik in ieder geval niet. Ik was (voor mijn biologische klok) te vroeg wakker om FP1 vanuit bed te kijken en kon me na 8 minuten weer omdraaien en verder slapen.

Natuurlijk moet je er flexibel mee omgaan...maar dit had niet gehoeven, dit is niks nieuws dat putdeksels issues opleveren...dus dat had gewoon allang gefixt moeten zijn van te voren...

  Ik heb zo'n vermoeden dat de organisatoren hebben onderschat hoe sterk het grondeffect van deze wagens is. Putdeksels hebben inderdaad vaker issues opgeleverd, en ik denk dat ze aan de hand van eerdere incidenten hebben bepaald hoe stevig de putdeksels vastgelast moeten worden. Met de extra zuigkracht die de auto's nu hebben, is die oude data waarschijnlijk niet zo relevant meer.

  Toto heeft wel gelijk. Wij (en ook hij) weten niet waarom deze putdeksels los zijn gekomen. Fouten worden gemaakt en het gaat er nu niet om wie precies de fout gemaakt heeft, maar hoe het opgelost wordt. Het is een nieuw circuit en er zal toch geraced moeten worden. Over de schuldvraag kan men zich volgende week als de Grand Prix is afgelopen rustig over gaan buigen. En ja: als een of beide Mercedes auto's schade had gehad, dan had Toto heel anders gereageerd.
