Marko lacht: "Misschien had Max het iets diplomatieker kunnen zeggen"

Max Verstappen was in de afgelopen dagen enorm kritisch op de organisatie en de show in Las Vegas. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur schreef vandaag de race op zijn naam en de tevredenheid was groot. Helmut Marko stelt grappend dat de organisatie nu vast heel blij is met Verstappen.

De Nederlander was in de afgelopen dagen enorm kritisch op alles in Las Vegas. Hij hekelde de show rondom de race, hij kraakte de baan en de organisatie en hij was ook uitermate kritisch op mensen die het putdeksel-incident van de eerste vrije training bagatelliseerden. In de race moest hij vechten voor zijn plek en na duels met George Russell, Sergio Perez en Charles Leclerc kwam hij als winnaar over de streep.

Viva Las Vegas

Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko concludeerde na afloop dat het een fantastische race was. De Oostenrijker lachte en stelde dat Verstappens mening nu compleet was veranderd. In gesprek met De Telegraaf refereerde hij aan alle kritische teksten van Verstappen: "Maar, nu na de race zong hij zelfs Viva Las Vegas! Al denk ik wel dat hij zich misschien beter kan richten op zijn race-carrière!"

Diplomatieker

Marko snapt ook wel dat Verstappen zo kritisch is op de organisatie en de show. De Oostenrijker geeft wel toe dat Verstappen iets minder fel had kunnen zijn: "Max is altijd rechtdoorzee, hij had dingen misschien iets diplomatieker kunnen zeggen, maar nu heeft hij alles goed gemaakt. Ik weet zeker dat de organisatie nu heel blij met hem is. Je moet ook begrijpen dat we aan het einde van het seizoen zitten. Iedereen is moe, iedereen worstelt met de jetlag en we hadden wallen onder onze ogen. Max hij niet van PR-gedoe, maar tachtig procent van onze sponsoren komt hier vandaan."

  Jazeker. Hij heeft van zichzelf ook wel eens gezegd dat ie soms wat diplomatieker kan zijn.
  
  Who cares. Iedereen is anders en heft zijn eigen manier om zich te uiten. Dat verzacht met de jaren maar de aard van het beestje veranderd nooit, en dat is maar goed ook anders kunnen we hier niemand afzeiken.

Natuurlijk heeft hij het naar zijn zin gehad, maar niet zoals hij dat zou hebben op Spa of Monza zoals hij eerder al aangaf. Ik raad iedereen aan om de laatste twee minuten van de persconferentie na afloop van de kwalificatie te kijken. Dat is gewoon uitstekend, eerlijk en netjes verwoord. Het is ook gewoon een culture clash met Europa. Laten we in ieder geval hopen dat het hierbij blijft en dat er geen vierde race komt daar in de straten van New York City.
