Het Formule 1-seizoen zit er alweer een aantal weken op. Terwijl het jaar op zijn einde loopt, zijn de teams allang bezig met het nieuwe seizoen. GPToday.net kijkt nog één keer naar de prestaties van de coureurs in 2023. Vandaag in deel twee: Logan Sargeant, de man met de Amerikaanse droom.

Aanloop

Voor het eerst sinds 2015 stond er dit seizoen weer een Amerikaanse coureur op de grid. Niemand minder dan Logan Sargeant uit Fort Lauderdale mocht zijn debuut maken in de Formule 1. Hij stond ook nog eens onder contract bij het iconische team van Williams. Tot zover het zoetsappige verhaal van de American Dream. De situatie van Sargeant was immers niet zo rooskleurig als hierboven wordt geschetst.

Sargeant was in zijn juniorencarrière namelijk geen megatalent. In 2021 werd hij wel opgepikt door Williams, maar in dat jaar werd hij wel slechts zevende in de Formule 3. Teambaas Jost Capito had echter alle vertrouwen in hem en de Amerikaan mocht in 2022 al veel vrije trainingen rijden. Williams probeerde hem aan genoeg superlicentiepunten te helpen zodat hij in 2023 kon debuteren in de Formule 1.

Sargeant kwam in aanmerking voor een superlicentie en dat betekende dat hij mocht gaan debuteren. Hij moest de leegte gaan vullen die cultheld Nicholas Latifi had achtergelaten. De Amerikaanse coureur moest echter direct afrekenen met zijn criticasters. Er werd gesteld dat hij vooral in de Formule 1 zat vanwege het geld en zijn resultaten in de opstapklassen waren niet bepaald indrukwekkend. Daarnaast was Capito ook nog eens vertrokken als teambaas.

Steun

Desalniettemin kreeg Sargeant vanaf het begin direct veel steun van Williams. De Amerikaan maakte soms onhandige en zelfs domme fouten, maar een echt modderfiguur sloeg hij niet. Zijn pech was dat zijn teamgenoot luisterde naar de naam van Alexander Albon. De Thai verkeerde soms in bloedvorm en vooral in de kwalificaties kon Sargeant niets inbrengen tegen zijn teamgenoot. Sterker nog, in geen enkele kwalificatie was de Amerikaan sneller dan zijn teamgenoot.

Prestaties

Het was overigens niet zo dat Sargeant geen deuk in een pakje boter reed. In Las Vegas liet hij zijn landgenoten juichen in de kwalificatie. Hij mocht starten van een razendknappe zesde plaats, één plek achter Albon. Sargeant wilde graag schitteren tussen de casino’s, maar de zestiende plaats was niet het gewenste resultaat.

Enkele weken eerder in Austin mocht Sargeant wél juichen. Hij pakte op het Circuit of the Americas zijn eerste WK-punt. Hij hoorde pas in het vliegtuig dat hij een puntje had gepakt, want door de diskwalificaties van Lewis Hamilton en Charles Leclerc schoof hij op naar de tiende plaats.

Het zorgde voor de nodige hilariteit onder sommige internetters, maar Sargeant lachte als laatst. Hij deed namelijk iets wat zijn voorgangers Scott Speed en Alexander Rossi deze eeuw niet lukte: een punt pakken. De trots was aanwezig, maar Sargeant moest ook in de spiegel kijken.

Toekomst

In zijn debuutseizoen viel hij namelijk zeven keer uit. In Zandvoort knalde hij de muur in en zijn uitvalbeurt in Qatar was nog opvallender. Sargeant had het zwaar in de hitte en hij klaagde over de boordradio over fysieke problemen. Hij maakte de beslissing om de strijd te staken en de monteurs haalden hem met uitdrogingsverschijnselen uit de auto.

In Abu Dhabi sloot hij het seizoen af met een zestiende plaats. Hij kon echter niet zorgeloos van zijn vakantie gaan genieten. Als enige had Sargeant nog geen contract op zak voor 2024. Ondanks een paar geruchten over Frederik Vesti, kreeg Sargeant contractverlenging. De Amerikaanse droom is nog in leven, maar in 2024 moet hij ook gaan leveren.

1 ding dat in de loopbaan van Sargeant een mega plus was, heeft hij zelf onderuitgehaald...

Blijf clean en maak meters en ervaring.
Ik begrijp de verlenging. In 2022 was hij sneller dan Vesti. Keer op keer. Vesti is dan ook geen verbetering omdat die nu 2de werd in een zwak F2 jaar. Waarom Zwak? Omdat de kampioen een stuk vaker uit de punten was dan Drugovich 4x (2dnf) vs 7x (2dnf). Ook heeft Pouchaire maar 1x gewonnen... dat geeft aan dat de rest achter hem alleen maar wisselvalligheden heeft gekend.

Bij gebrek aan beter, zeer begrijpelijk Sargeant een 2de jaar te geven en mogelijk 2025 Kimi Antonelli als sensatie naast Albon te krijgen.
