Mercedes verraste Horner: "Dat concept was duidelijk gefaald"

Het team van Red Bull Racing was dit jaar enorm sterk in de Formule 1. Ze waren haast onverslaanbaar en Ferrari en Mercedes konden amper in de buurt komen. Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner was verbaasd dat Mercedes weer koos voor hetzelfde concept als in 2022.

Red Bull werd dit seizoen slechts één keer verslagen door een ander team. Alleen in Singapore wisten ze de Grand Prix niet te winnen, toen ging de zege naar Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz. Het team van Mercedes wist dit seizoen geen enkele race te winnen en dat zorgde voor enorm veel teleurstelling. Mercedes reed in de eerste paar races weer met het zeropod-design. Dat was opvallend aangezien het design niet naar wens functioneerde.

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner had veel meer verwacht van zijn concurrenten. De Brit is vooral verrast door de prestaties van Mercedes. Bij Motorsport.com is hij duidelijk: "Wat ons verraste, was dat Ferrari vorig jaar een goede auto had. Met de natuurlijke evolutie daarvan verwachtten we dat ze daar dit jaar een echt tegenstander zouden zijn. We waren heel verrast dat Mercedes vasthield aan de concepten die vorig jaar duidelijk waren gefaald. Als je tijdens de wintertest naar de auto's keek, waren de Aston Martins en de McLarens de auto die qua concept het dichts bij ons kwamen."

    Maar wie binnen zo'n organisatie is er dan toe in staat om door te drukken er toch mee door te gaan? Dat is nou zoiets waar ik altijd benieuwd naar blijf.

    Dat is ook toevallig en uitgerekend naar deze teams zijn talentvolle Red Bull medewerkers voor veel geld gekaapt.

    [vervolg] Ondanks de voortvarende start met dominante zeges in Bahrein en Saudi-Arabië duurde het even voordat Red Bull zichzelf als de belangrijkste gegadigde zag voor de wereldtitels van 2023.
    Pas na de zege van Max Verstappen in Australië begon dat besef te komen, ook doordat de renstal daar in 2022 nog verslagen werd door Charles Leclerc en Ferrari.

    "Na Bahrein wisten we wel dat we een heel goed pakket hadden, maar we wisten niet of dat aan het circuit lag qua temperatuur, omstandigheden en asfalt", legde Horner uit.
    "Pas als je twee, drie races hebt gehad en naar circuits bent geweest waar je wat meer problemen hebt gehad in het voorgaande jaar, zoals Melbourne bijvoorbeeld, begin je te denken 'oké, dit valt echt in elkaar'.
    Je hebt dus enkele races nodig voor een duidelijker beeld. Niemand verliet Bahrein met de gedachte dat het wel zou lukken."
