FIA-president vindt zichzelf 'anders' dan voorgangers

Mohammed Ben Sulayem is sinds eind 2021 de president van de FIA. Sindsdien heeft hij te maken gehad met veel opvallende en spraakmakende zaken. Ben Sulayem is tevreden, hij stelt niet dat hij een betere president is dan zijn voorganger. Hij zegt alleen dat hij anders is.

Ben Sulayem speelde in de afgelopen maanden regelmatig een hoofdrol in relletjes omtrent de Formule 1. Hij zette de deur op een kier voor mogelijke nieuwe teams, terwijl de huidige teams daar niet op zitten te wachten. Vervolgens keurde hij de plannen van Andretti Cadillac goed, iets waar de teams ook niet heel blij mee zijn. Aan het einde van het jaar werd zijn naam ook nog eens genoemd bij het kortstondige FIA-onderzoek naar Toto en Susie Wolff.

Ben Sulayem neemt zijn werkzaamheden zeer serieus. De FIA-president wil er alles aan doen om te slagen. In een interview met Motorsport Magazin barst hij los: "Het is een missie! Ik ben verkozen om te dienen. Ik zeg niet dag ik een betere president ben dan mijn voorganger, maar ik ben anders. Mijn voorgangers kwamen niet uit de autoclubs. Ik denk daardoor als lid. Na mijn loopbaan als rallycoureur ben ik gaan werken voor de vereniging. Daardoor denk ik als FIA-lid. Ik pleit voor een dynamische FIA, omdat de aard van onze sport dynamisch is. Het oplossen van problemen moet sneller gaan. We maken fouten, maar daar leren we van."
