FIA-president ziet Afrikaanse race wel zitten: "Goede contacten"

Afrika is momenteel het enige continent waar geen Grand Prix wordt verreden. Er wordt al geruime tijd gelobbyd voor een race op het Afrikaanse continent, maar vooralsnog heeft dit geen concrete plannen opgeleverd. FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem stelt dat de contacten in ieder geval goed zijn.

Al geruime tijd gaan er geruchten rond over een mogelijke comeback van de Zuid-Afrikaanse Grand Prix. Hiervoor wordt er gedacht aan een race op het circuit van Kyalami, maar dit is nog geen werkelijkheid geworden. Onder meer Lewis Hamilton en Stefano Domenicali hebben zich al uitgesproken over het belang van een race in Afrika. Mede vanwege de overvolle kalender, is het nog maar de vraag of er ruimte is voor een extra Grand Prix.

Goede contacten

Ook FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is zich bewust van het belang van een Afrikaanse Grand Prix. Hij stelt dat er in ieder geval warme banden zijn met de lokale autosportbonden. Ben Sulayem wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "We hebben hele goede contacten in Afrika. We moeten meer aandacht geven aan Afrika, we hebben daar ook een heel erg goede vicepresident. We hebben de autosportclubs daar ook versterkt."

Zuid-Afrika

Ben Sulayem ziet ook de komst van een race in Zuid-Afrika wel zitten. De FIA-president weet dat er niet overal in Afrika interesse is, maar in dit land wel: "In Zuid-Afrika ligt veel autosporthistorie. Sinds vorig jaar gaan er veel verhalen rond over een terugkeer naar Kyalami. Dat zou een big deal zijn voor Afrika. We denken ook aan een elektrisch kampioenschap dat Afrika meer kan gaan betrekken, dat zou ook mooi zijn. We vergeten Afrika niet, we vergeten China niet, maar we vergeten Latijns-Amerika ook niet."

Als we het midden oosten al races hebben welke bol staan van de omkoping, negeren van mensen rechten enz., hoe denk je dat dat gaat in Afrika? War lords, openlijk geweld, drugs gelden enz. Nee, echt een enorme voorruitgang! En veel beter dan de klassieke circuits...

En ja, vroeger was het ook niet best in Afrika. Ook al zijn er toen behoorlijk wat races verreden (meer dan 20 uit mijn hoofd). De reden dat het daar gestopt is was niet omdat alles zo goed georganiseerd was of dat er geen louche transacties waren. Ook apartheid heeft hier een rol in gespeeld.

Waarom nou altijd zuidafrika? T land heeft een valuta van niks... en op downtown kaapstad na is het (in mijn bezoek) niet beter dan Nigeria of Egypte (ik weet t, ik noem de besten van de klas ook wel weer op)

Ja er is een circuit... maar de gemiddelde zuidafrikaan kan een duur F1 ticket net zo min betalen als waar elders in Afrika

Waarom niet, plaats zat daar.

We jagen wat inboorlingen en wild weg en we kunnen gaan asfalteren.
Tribunes maken we van hetzelfde materiaal wat die inboorlingen gebruiken voor hun huizen......stront en stro...met 'n beetje pies.

Ben is gek, als hij dat nog niet wist, bij deze, 21 Grand Prix is toch een prima aantal.

Rusland, China het Midden-Oosten en ook Turkije zijn behoorlijk actief met investeren in Afrika. Ja je ziet het is een mooi rijtje boeven met vele dollars waar de FIA maar al te graag een graantje van meepikt.
Het wordt allemaal in het vat gegoten alsof Afrika er een groot voordeel van zal hebben. Maar kijk maar naar het WK voetbal jaren geleden, er is geen enkele goede Afrikaan beter van geworden.
Ben doet net of het hem allemaal om de historie te doen is, Ben liegt dat ie barst.
