'Norris kan geen races winnen door Red Bull-dominantie'

Lando Norris wordt gezien als één van de grootste talenten van het moment. De Britse McLaren-coureur liet vorig jaar weer mooie dingen zien, maar hij heeft nog steeds geen race gewonnen. Volgens Jenson Button is dat logisch, want Red Bull Racing en Max Verstappen domineren de sport.

Norris kende vorig jaar een zeer sterke tweede seizoenshelft in de Formule 1. De Brit profiteerde van de updates van McLaren en hij stond met enige regelmaat op het podium. Hij jaagt nog steeds op zijn eerste overwinning, maar dat lukte hem ook afgelopen jaar dus niet. Ook in de sprints kon hij geen overwinning pakken, zijn teamgenoot Oscar Piastri deed dat wel in Qatar. Norris baalt van het feit dat hij nog steeds niet heeft gewonnen.

Moeilijk

Enkelvoudig wereldkampioen Jenson Button leeft mee met zijn landgenoot. Button begrijpt dat Norris baalt, maar hij stelt dat het niet zijn schuld is. In gesprek met The Mirror wijst Button namelijk naar de overheersing van Verstappen en Red Bull: "Het is moeilijk, maar op deze manier, met zo'n dominante coureur en zo'n goed team, kan er slechts één persoon winnen. Dus als je tweede kunt worden, is dat een goed startpunt."

Verandering

Button spreekt Norris dan ook moed in. De voormalig Formule 1-coureur kent de sport goed en hij drukt Norris op het hart dat er snel veel kan gaan veranderen: "Het doet pijn als er zo'n dominant team jarenlang heerst in de sport, maar dat verandert ook. We hebben het zien veranderen. Ik dacht vroeger niet dat iemand in staat zou zijn om Mercedes te verslaan, maar dat gebeurde dus wel. Red Bull was ineens daar en ze hebben ze verslagen."

  Dit jaar was er maar 1 auto dominant. En dat was die van Verstappen. Met elke andere rijder in de plek van Verstappen zou waarschijnlijk Norris een race of 2 a 3 hebben gewonnen. Hamilton ook trouwens. Die zou ook wel ergens hebben gewonnen.

  Monza 2021 was wel begrijpelijk, want je wil niet een enorm risico nemen en een 1-2 verpesten. Dat was die race die Ricciardo won toch? Ik denk niet dat je dit Norris aan kan rekenen.
  
  In Sochi 2021 nam hij een enorme gok. Altijd makkelijk om iemand achteraf dan af te maken. Ik heb destijds die discussie vaker gezien. Toevallig binnen een niet al te groot tijdsbestek gebeurde ook zoiets in de MotoGP. Het begon te regenen en van de hele top 6 (die allemaal bij elkaar in de buurt lagen) was Brad Binder de enige die de gok nam om op slicks door te gaan. Het ging precies goed.... glibberend en glijdend kwam hij als 1e over de race... maar de race had geen 10 seconden langer mogen duren, want dan was het echt compleet mis gegaan. En toen vond iedereen de gok geweldig.
  
  Dus ja.... mensen kijken heel resultaat gericht. Pakt de gok goed uit, dan noemen ze het "briljant". Pakt de gok verkeerd uit, dan noemen ze het een "flater" of "blunder" of "grote fout". Beide gevallen waren een enorme gok. En dan is het altijd jammer dat mensen er achteraf zo zwart-wit naar kijken.

  @Damon Ik heb bewust de woorden heel mild gekozen “laten liggen”. Hij waren zeker geen blunders of dergelijke.
  
  Ik vind alleen dat Verstappen en Hamilton hun kansen veel beter pakken. Als je een van hun een halve kans geeft dan zetten ze een tandje bij en persen ze er iets bijzonder uit. Dat extra tandje mis ik bij Norris.

Toen mercedes domineerde, kon die ook geen races winnen. Piastri kon wel een sprintrace winnen in zijn rookie seizoen. Zegt veel over Piastri maar het zegt ook veel over Norris...

  Toch is Norris nog wel een tandje beter, je moet ook wel een beetje geluk hebben soms.
  Piastri had het geluk dat die sprintrace voor een groot deel achter de saftycar werd verreden.
  In de f1 is je tweede jaar vaak lastiger dan je debuut seizoen, omdat de verwachtingen, en druk nu een stuk hoger zijn.
  Hij zal komend seizoen Norris echt moeten uitdagen in de races, interessant om te zien hoe zijn progressie zal zijn.
