Dankbare Alonso ziet veel overeenkomsten met Verstappen

Fernando Alonso kende afgelopen jaar een opvallend sterk seizoen in de Formule 1. De ervaren Spanjaard stond met enige regelmaat op het podium en hij vocht meerdere topduels uit. Alonso genoot daarvan en hij stelt dat Max Verstappen één van de coureurs is die met respect racet.

Alonso rijdt sinds vorig jaar voor het team van Aston Martin. De transfer zorgde voor de nodige verbazing, maar Alonso liet zien dat het een goede keuze was. De Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen liet zijn talent maar weer eens zien en dat zorgde voor machtige duels. Alonso stak niet onder stoelen of banken dat hij genoot van zijn duels met Max Verstappen en hij deelt dan ook complimenten uit aan de Nederlander.

Alonso stelt dat hij weinig vrienden heeft op de grid. Wel heeft hij veel respect voor de meeste van zijn concullega's. De Spanjaard legt het uit in een documentaire bij zijn landgenoten van DAZN: "Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez zijn twee coureurs die je kan vertrouwen op de baan. Je zag dat bijvoorbeeld in Brazilië met Checo. Hij vocht daar hard, maar wel met respect. Verstappen was in het begin misschien iets wilder en hij had een paar incidenten, maar nu is hij een heel solide coureur op de baan. Naast de baan zie ik veel overeenkomsten met hem. We houden allebei van racen. Voor ons is het eerst de sport en dan de show."
