Leclerc pakt gelukkige zege, Nyck de Vries elfde

Charles Leclerc heeft in Barcelona opnieuw laten zien dat hij toekomstig Formule 1-materiaal is. Na een indrukwekkende zege in de sprintrace in Bahrein, wist de Monegask in Barcelona de hoofdrace op zijn naam te schrijven. Er moet gezegd worden dat Leclerc geluk had met de timing van een Safety Car, maar dat doet niets af aan de prestatie. Nyck de Vries had geen geluk met de Safety Car en finishte als elfde. Op het podium kreeg Leclerc gezelschap van Luca Ghiotto en Oliver Rowland.

Vanaf pole kwam Leclerc het beste weg, Ghiotto en Albon volgden op plek twee en drie. Nyck de Vries kwam minder goed uit de startblokken en verloor wat plaatsen. Het terugvallen van De Vries had mede te maken met de bandenkeuze, de Nederlander koos er in tegenstelling tot de concurrentie voor om te starten op de harde banden.

Leclerc en Ghiotto besloten al vroeg naar binnen te komen en wisselden naar de harde band. Even later werd de race geneutraliseerd omdat Sergio Canamasas zijn auto op een ongelukkige plek had neergezet na een motorprobleem. De Vries lag op dat moment derde, maar moest nog een stop maken.

Bij de herstart ging Albon aan de leiding, Rowland en De Vries volgden op plaatsen twee en drie. De Vries kon het tempo niet volgen van de leiders en moest ook steeds meer naar achteren kijken. Luca Ghiotto en Charles Leclerc vochten zich ondertussen steeds verder naar voren en wisten de ene na de andere concurrent te passeren. Ghiotto kon aanvankelijk goed volgen, maar toch toezien hoe Leclerc langzaam bij hem weg reed.

Leiders Rowland en Albon maakten als laatsten hun stop en hadden het voordeel dat ze niet al te ver terugvielen. Omdat beide heren op verse zachte banden reden konden ze het gat naar de leiders verkleinen. Hoewel Rowland alles probeerde, was het gat naar de leiders te groot en moest de Brit genoegen nemen met een derde plaats.

Voor Nyck de Vries eindigde de race in mineur. De jonge Nederlander had pech met de Safety Car en kon zijn strategische bandenkeuze niet uitbuiten. De sprintrace start straks om 10:35 uur, Markelov zal de sprintrace van pole starten door zijn achtste plaats in de hoofdrace.

De pech blijft bij Nyck een beetje aan zijn kont hangen. Wanneer valt bij hem alles een keer op zijn plek verdorie!
