Viscaal wil succes Monza herhalen: "Maar we moeten ons beter kwalificeren"

In Italië beleefde F2-rijder Bent Viscaal zijn hoogtepunt tot dusver met een tweede plaats in de tweede sprintace. Op de officiële website zei de 21-jarige coureur over deze knappe prestatie: ''Mijn eerste podium was absoluut geweldig, niet alleen voor mij, maar ook voor het team, tijdens hun thuisrace. Het was een behoorlijk speciaal gevoel en het was welverdiend voor het team, dat lang heeft gewacht op een podium. Daar was ik super blij mee.''

De Trident-coureur is dit seizoen niet vaak in de positie om punten te scoren of bokalen mee naar huis te nemen. Dat ligt aan één duidelijke oorzaak: de kwalificatie. Vaak eindigde Viscaal in de achterhoede en dat was op Monza niet anders. "We moeten beter presteren omdat P18 absoluut niet is waar we thuishoren, zoals je in de races kon zien. Om de een of andere reden hebben we ons kwalificatiesnelheid dit jaar helemaal niet kunnen vinden. Het was lastig, maar we moeten het oplossen. Als we dat kunnen, zal het voor ons een stuk makkelijker zijn."

Doordat Viscaal regelmatig buiten de top tien start, moet de Trident-coureur in de wedstrijd aan een lastige inhaalslag beginnen. Toch is dat voor de coureur uit Aalbergen niet alleen maar nadelig geweest. "Ik heb mijn inhaalvaardigheden in een F2-auto aanzienlijk verbeterd. Monza is een circuit met harde remzones en ook een uitloopgebied, dus je haalt echt het meeste uit de remprestaties van de auto. Ik leer elke keer dat ik in de auto stap, en Monza was niet anders, nogmaals, ik heb veel geleerd", voegde de Nederlander toe.

Het volgende treffen is in Rusland in het weekend van 25 september. Het succes in Italië hoopt Viscaal op de baan van Sotsji te herhalen. "We scoorden een eerste podium in Monza en behaalden een aantal solide punten in het algemeen, dus we zullen hetzelfde moeten doen in Sotsji. Bovenal zullen we onze prestaties in de kwalificatie flink moeten verbeteren. We moeten op zijn minst in de top tien komen, want dat zou ons leven zoveel gemakkelijker maken."
