Giorgio Pantano houdt het hoofd koel in Istanbul Park

Voormalig Jordan F1-coureur Giorgio Pantano heeft vanmiddag de GP2-race in Istanbul Park op zijn naam geschreven. De Racing Engineering-coureur leidde van start tot finish en zelfs een safety car-periode in de slotfase kon hem niet van de wijs brengen.

Pantano zet zijn pole position om in de leiding in de race na de eerste bocht, terwijl Grosjean zichzelf katapulteert van vier naar twee. Grote verliezer is Bruno Senna. Het neefje van Ayrton Senna raakt een andere auto op weg naar de eerste bocht en moet naar de pits om zijn voorvleugel te laten vervangen. Hij zal uiteindelijk na twee pitstops finishen als vijftiende.

Pantano loopt ondertussen hard weg bij Grosjean en bouwt een voorsprong op van bijna acht seconden. Tot het moment dat Alberto Valerio spint in bocht 8. Valerio's staat net naast de racelijn in de snelste bocht van het circuit, waardoor de safety-car op de baan komt. De top drie maakt tijdens de neutralisatie een pitstop, maar zorgt daarmee voor een run naar de finish van zes ronden op hagelnieuwe banden.

Pantano bouwt razendsnel weer een voorsprong op van drie seconden op Grosjean en cruist naar de finish. Andreas Zuber pakt de laatste podiumplek. Yelmer Buurman eindigt de race als veertiende, Ho-Pin Tung finisht, opnieuw achter zijn teamgenoot, als elfde.

Morgen wordt de tweede GP2-race verreden. Daarin zal de top acht van de eerste race omgedraaid worden. Adam Carroll zal morgen dus de eer hebben van pole position te mogen starten.
