Romain Grosjean wint bizarre sprintrace op Istanbul Park

Romain Grosjean heeft vanmorgen de psrintrace gewonnen op het circuit van Istanbul, na een imdrukwekkende rit vanaf de zevende startplaats. De race zal echter vooral herinnerd worden door een bizar incident waarbij Bruno Senna betrokken raakt.

Adam Carroll leidt het veld vanaf pole bij de start maar heeft problemen met zijn koppeling en zorgt voor hevige opstoppingen in de eerste en derde bocht. Dit zorgt voor een safety-car. Vitaly Petrov heeft de leiding gepakt voor Buemi, Villa en Grosjean. Grosjean gaat voorbij aan Villa in de vierde ronde en loopt vervolgens hard richting de achterkant van Buemi. Grosjean passeert de jonge Zwitser twee ronden later aan het eind van het rechte stuk. Petrov blijkt een hardere noot om te kraken, maar Grosjean pakt uiteindelijk toch de leiding in de elfde ronde.

Precies op dat moment voltrekt zich een drama op het circuit. Twee verdwaalde honden lopen op het circuit. Bruno Senna, die zich al had opgewerkt van de vijftiende naar de zesde plaats, rijdt frontaal op een van de dieren in. Dit vernield de complete rechtervoorkant van zijn auto, waardoor een aangeslagen Senna moet opgeven. De safety-car komt op de baan om de andere hond te vangen.

Grosjean heeft nog even moeite met Petrov, maar rijdt uiteindelijk acht seconden weg en wint comfortabel, terwijl Petrov Buemi van zich af houdt voor de tweede plaats. Giorgio Pantano, de winnaar van gisteren, eindigt als vierde voor Mike Conway en Ben Hanley. De beide Britten doen goede zaken, ondanks slechte startposities.

Javier Villa en Karun Chandhok elimineren elkaar in de slotfase. Ze zouden in de punten gefinisht zijn, maar raken elkaar en eindigen respectievelijk als twaalfde en vijftiende.
