Giorgio Pantano wint thriller in Silverstone

Giorgio Pantano heeft zijn leidende positie in het GP2-kampioenschap vanmiddag verstevigd met een overwinnig in een incidentrijke GP2-race op Silverstone. Lucas di Grassi verliest het gevecht om de leiding in de wedstrijd en eindigt als tweede, voor Karun Chandhok.

Bij de start gaat het er al direct heftig aan toe. Senna leidt veilig vanaf pole na de eerste bocht, maar Di Grassi pakt de tweede plek af van Grosjean. De Fransman dwingt tevens Zuber te liften in Copse, waardoor Pantano de vierde plek kan pakken. Senna zet in de derde ronde de snelste rondetijd neer, maar gooit alles weg door een fout te maken in Stowe. Ploegend door het gras op zoek naar grip verliest hij maar liefst vier plekken. Zuber pakt hij al bijna direct weer terug.

Rondenlang houdt Pantano de druk hoog op de man op de tweede plek, Romain Grosjean. Uiteindelijk passeert hij de Fransman, maar niet zonder hem te raken. De achterstand op leider Di Grassi is dan 3,7 seconden, maar hij begint aan een opmars. Met nog zes ronden te gaan plaatst Pantano een gewaagde manouvre bij Di Grassi en passeert hem voor de leiding. Hij loopt hard weg en boekt zijn achtste overwinning in de GP2. Een nieuw record, dat hij voorheen nog deelde met Timo Glock.

Bruno Senna zorgt in de laatste ronde nog voor actie. Hij passeert Grosjean in Stowe via de buitenkant voor de vierde plek, maar gooit die plek later die ronde alsnog weg door van de baan te gaan. Het kost de Braziliaan een belangrijk punt.

Pantano leidt het kampioenschap nu stevig met 13 punten voorsprong op Senna. Sebastian Buemi rukt op naar de derde plek, ten koste van Grosjean.
