Pal Verhaug wint eerste GP3-race ooit, polesitter Melker valt uit

Pal Verhaug heeft vanmiddag de allereerste GP3-race ooit gewonnen. De coureur van Jenzer Motorsport startte de race als tweede en pakte bij de start meteen al de leiding over van Nigel Melker die in de eerste ronde al uitviel. Renger van der Zande eindigde als vijftiende.

Melker mocht de eerste race vanaf de pole position starten, maar kwam erg slecht weg. Hierdoor pakte Verhaug al de eerste positie over, gevolgd door Robert Wickens. De Canadees bleef Verhaug in het begin van de race nog goed bij, maar moest later zijn tweede plaats verdedigen tegen Esteban Gutierrez. Melker was ondertussen al uitvallen door een van de crashes in de eerste ronden, waarbij in totaal al zeven coureurs werden geëlimineerd.

Hierdoor kreeg Varhaug in de laatste paar ronden wat ruimte en wist zo de eerste overwinning veilig te stellen met 1,5 seconden voorsprong op Wickens. Gutierrez volgde op 1,9 seconden achterstand als derde. Dean Smith pakte de vierde plaats, gevolgd door Jean-Eric Vergne, Simon Trummer, Lucas Foresti en Alexander Rossi. Rossi reed een erg sterke race, want de ART-coureur moest de race vanaf de laatste startrij beginnen. Renger van der Zande viel tegen in deze race, gestart vanaf de negende plaats eindigde de Nederlander als vijftiende.
