Boschung wint in zeiknat Oostenrijk, Leclerc valt uit

De sprintrace in de GP3 op de Red Bull Ring is gewonnen door Boschung. De Zwitser, uitkomend voor Korainen GP, pakte de leiding nadat Hughes van de baan spinde. De race werd verreden in zeer natte omstandigheden, gedomineerd door spins en de Safety Car. Minder dan een kwart van de race werd op racesnelheid verreden. Charles Leclerc, de leider in het kampioenschap, viel uit na een crash.

Het was nat in Oostenrijk, heel nat. De wedstrijdleiding twijfelde geen moment en besloot de race te laten starten achter de Safety Car. Omdat de omstandigheden pas langzaam beter werden werden de eerste negen ronden achter de Safety Car verreden.

Bij de herstart ging het mis voor de leider: Hughes spinde eraf. Ralph Boschung pakte de leiding en stond deze niet meer af, mede omdat de laatste vier ronden achter de Safety Car werden verreden. Het is de eerste zege voor Boschung. Nyck de Vries finishte de race als vierde, Steijn Schothorst finishte op een twaalfde plaats.

Leclerc blijft leider in het kampioenschap, maar Albon heeft slechts vijf punten achterstand. Nyck de Vries blijft vijfde met 31 punten. De volgende GP3-races worden volgende week verreden, op het circuit van Silverstone.
