Robert Wickens sterkste in chaotische race, Van der Zande derde

Robert Wickens heeft vandaag een chaotische eerste GP3-race op Hockenheim gewonnen. De Canadees bleef James Jakes 2,3 seconden voor op de finish. Renger van der Zande heeft eindelijk zijn eerste punten van het seizoen gescoord met een mooie podiumplaats.

Door de vele straffen die waren uitgedeeld na de kwalificatie mocht Josef Newgarden vanaf de pole position vertrekken. James Jakes kreeg de tweede positie in handen, terwijl Robert Wickens als derde mocht starten. De Canadees kende echter een goede start en pakte meteen de leiding over.

In de tweede bocht ging het echter mis voor enkele coureurs wat de Safety Car op de baan bracht. Nico Muller, Nigel Melker, Miki Monras, Leonardo Cordeiro, Adrian Quaife-Hobbs en Lucas Foresti konden allen al uitstappen in de eerste ronde. Vlak na de herstart ging het meteen weer mis met Alexander Rossi, die zijn auto in die van Daniel Morad boorde.

Nadat ook deze puinhoop was opgeruimd kon de race in één keer worden uitgereden. Wickens werd hierbij niet meer bedreigd en reed 2,3 seconden eerder over de finish dan Jakes. Renger van der Zande kende een sterke race en eindigde als derde, waarmee hij niet alleen zijn eerste podium, maar ook zijn eerste punten van het seizoen scoort.

Kampioenschapsleider Esteban Gutierrez pakte de vierde plaats, gevolgd door Stefano Coletti en het Addax-duo Mirko Bortolotti en Felipe Guimaraes. Daniel Juncadella completteerden de puntenscores en zal de tweede race vanaf de pole mogen vertrekken.
