Alex Albon pakt derde zege van het seizoen, De Vries dertiende

Voor de derde keer dit seizoen heeft Alex Albon een GP3-race gewonnen. De sprintrace van op de Hungaroring was een prooi voor de Britse Thai, die Arjun Maini en Charles Leclerc voorbleef.

De start werd opgeschrikt door een heftige crash van Akash Nandy. Achterin het veld kwam hij in aanraking met een concurrent, spinde de baan over en ging vervolgens enkele malen over de kop. De Maleisiër kon ongedeerd uitstappen, maar zorgde wel voor de enige safety car van de race.

Bij de hervatting ging het bijna fout met Charles Leclerc en Ralph Boschung. Boschung was overenthousiast bij de herstart en ramde Leclerc tot twee maal toe. Daarvoor werd de Zwitser bestraft met een drive-through penalty, waardoor hij niet verder kwam dan een 22e plaats. Vooraan reden Albon, Maini en Leclerc verder hun eigen wedstrijd en ze stormden, zonder onderlinge acties, af op de drie podiumplaatsen. Albon neemt met zijn zege de leiding in het kampioenschap over van ART-teamgenoot Leclerc: 107 om 104 punten.

De Nederlanders kenden een lastige sprintrace op de Hungaroring. Nyck de Vries maakte enkele plaatsen goed en was de beste Nederlander op een dertiende plaats, maar was wel betrokken bij de crash van Nandy. Steijn Schothorst had wederom een lastige race en werd twintigste.

Lijkt me einde bij McLaren voor de Vries. Nog niet de helft van de punten (46) van teamgenoten Leclerc (104) en Albon (107). Houd gelijke tred met Fukuzumi in het kampioenschap...
Jammer, maar lijkt er op dat hij niet op korte termijn door kan stoten naar hogere raceklassen.
