Leclerc op pole in spannende kwalificatie, De Vries negende

ART-coureur Charles Leclerc heeft zich de best mogelijke uitgangspositie verschaft voor de hoofdrace in de GP3 op het circuit van Monza. De Monegask, die aan de leiding gaat in het kampioenschap, was in een spannende kwalificatie net iets sneller dan Jake Dennis en Jack Aitken. Nyck de Vries stelde enigzins teleur met een negende startplaats, Schothorst start in de Campos op plek achttien.

Het zat erg dicht bij elkaar in de kwalificatie. Tussen de nummer een en nummer 20 zat precies een seconde. Alleen de nummers 21 en 22 op de grid konden niet binnen de seconde van de pole position tijd blijven. Halverwege de kwalificatie gaat De Vries naar de snelste tijd. Niet veel later volgt er een rode vlag, vanwege het stilvallen van Alesi.

Na de herstart van de sessie bestaat de top drie uit Aitken, Albon en Fukuzumi. Leclerc staat op dat moment nog vijfde, maar weet er een sterke ronde uit te persen om vervolgens de eerste plek over te nemen. Vanwege de rode vlag is het druk op de baan en is het managen van verkeer een uitdaging. Het lukt veel rijders dan ook niet om veel sneller te gaan.

De hoofdrace belooft een spannende te worden met de kleine verschillen tussen de coureurs. De lichten doven vanmiddag om 17:15 uur.
