Rahal sluit eerste dag Road America als snelste af

Graham Rahal heeft namens Rahal Letterman Racing de eerste dag trainingen op het beroemde Road America-circuit als snelste afgesloten. De Amerikaan werd in de eerste training getroffen door materiaalpech, maar herstelde zich knap in training twee. De eerste training werd als snelste afgesloten door Simon Pagenaud, de leider in het kampioenschap.

Rahal was iets meer dan een tiende sneller dan Will Power in de Penske. Chip Ganassi Racing zat er ook goed bij, met alle auto's in de top tien. Een opvallende prestatie van Ganassi, aangezien Max Chilton tot dusver nog niet echt mee kon komen ten opzichte van zijn meer ervaren teamgenoten Dixon en Kanaan.

Carlos Munoz zet zijn goede vorm voort. De Colombiaan trainde twee weken geleden op de Texas Motor Speedway de snelste tijd in de kwalificatie en kon ook tijdens de Indy500 goed meekomen. Juan Pablo Montoya kende voor het eerst in langere tijd weer een goede openingsdag van een IndyCar-weekend. De voormalig coureur van Williams en McLaren klokte een vierde tijd.

Een ander opvallend feit op de openingsdag was de terugkeer van Josef Newgarden. Newgarden maakte op de Texas Motor Speedway een zeer zware crash mee, maar is voldoende hersteld om terug te keren. Zijn team houdt JR Hildebrand nog wel achter de hand dit weekend, mocht Newgarden onverhoopt toch een terugval krijgen. Newgarden bouwde de trainingen rustig op en eindigde uiteindelijk als dertiende.

Simon Pagenaud, de leider in het kampioenschap, leek zich in de tweede training vooral te richten op de snelheid voor de race. De Fransman reed in het eerste bedrijf nog de snelste tijd, maar kwam in de tweede training niet verder dan plek vijftien.

Vanavond vindt er nog een vrije training plaats ter voorbereiding op de kwalificatie plaats. De kwalificatie wordt vanavond om 22:00 uur Nederlandse tijd verreden. IndyCar zend alle actie tegenwoordig ook live uit via YouTube.

Practice one pacesetter and current IndyCar championship leader Simon Pagenaud put in the most laps of anyone in the second session, with 19, but he finished down in 15th.

The planned 75-minute session was shortened by 90 seconds following a late red flag for Jack Hawksworth's stranded AJ Foyt Dallara-Honda at Turn 4.
