Power snelt naar pole position op Road America

In de vorige jaren reeg Will Power poles en overwinningen aaneen, maar dit seizoen wil het nog niet echt vlotten bij de Australiër. Pas een keer startte de IndyCar-veteraan dit jaar van pole, tijdens de openingsrace in St. Petersburg (Florida). Op het klassieke Road America kreeg Power het echter weer voor elkaar: hij mag van pole starten.

Na negen jaar keert het IndyCar circus dit weekend terug op Road America. De laatste keer dat vergelijkbare auto's op het circuit in actie kwamen was in 2007, toen de ChampCars het circuit bij Elkhart Lake aandeden. Achter Power start drievoudig kampioen Scott Dixon als tweede voor zijn teamgenoot Tony Kanaan.

Simon Pagenaud, de leider in het kampioenschap, start de race als vierde voor teamgenoot Helio Castroneves en Graham Rahal. Opvallend was dat Rahal zijn snelste ronde in de laatste sessie van de kwalificatie op de hardere band reed, terwijl de overige vijf rijders allemaal op de zachte band reden zoals gebruikelijk is.

Max Chilton kon zijn goede vorm van de trainingen doortrekken naar de kwalificatie. De voormalig Formule 1-coureur start de race als zevende. Ryan Hunter-Reay, Conor Daly en Carlos Munoz maken de top tien compleet.

James Hinchliffe, in de Indy500 nog startend vanaf pole, zal de race als laatste aanvangen nadat zijn twee snelste ronden werden afgenomen vanwege het blokkeren van een andere coureur.

De race op Road America start vanavond om 19:15 en is live te volgen via het YouTube-kanaal van IndyCar.
