Gelukkige Power eist zege op in straten van Toronto

Na een late caution en een sprint naar de finish van één rondje heeft Will Power de IndyCar-wedstrijd in Toronto gewonnen. De Penske-coureur bleef teamgenoot Helio Castroneves en thuisrijder James Hinchcliffe voor.

Het was polesitter Scott Dixon die gedurende lange tijd de beste papieren in handen leek te hebben. Power kon meekomen met de koplopers, maar ook niet meer dan dat. Na nog geen dertig ronden leek ook Castroneves niet meer mee te doen om de zege, nadat hij een lekke band opliep. Het Canadese stratencircuit was daarvan de schuldige.

Na de caution, gebruikt door de organisatie om de troep op de baan iets op te ruimen, ging Dixon er weer vandoor, maar de volgende caution speelde hem duidelijk niet in de kaart. Precies op het moment dat Power in de pits stond, crashte Josef Newgarden hard. Power profiteerde en sloot achter Tony Kanaan aan op de tweede plaats, maar de Braziliaan had niet genoeg brandstof om uit te kunnen rijden.

Zodoende kon Power zijn derde zege in vier wedstrijden opeisen. Castroneves reed zichzelf nog knap terug naar een tweede plek, gevolgd door Hinchcliffe en Kanaan. Takuma Sato pakte, geholpen door de neutralisatie, een vijfde plek, voor Mikhail Aleshin, Sebastien Bourdais, Dixon, Simon Pagenaud en Marco Andretti.
