Aleshin behaalt eerste pole op Pocono

Een jaar na het fatale ongeluk van de geliefde Justin Wilson keert de IndyCar terug op de Pocono Raceway. De man op pole is een verrassing: de Rus Mikhail Aleshin reed naar zijn eerste pole uit zijn IndyCar-loopbaan. Het is de tweede pole voor het team van Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Josef Newgarden start de race als tweede, voor de verrassende derde man Takuma Sato. De topcoureurs kwamen er op de Pocono Raceway niet aan te pas.

Zo start Simon Pagenaud, de leider in het kampioenschap, vanaf een matige veertiende plaats. Drievoudig kampioen Dixon maakte het helemaal bont, de Nieuw-Zeelander start de race vanaf een negentiende plaats. De pole van Aleshin komt als een verrassing. Lange tijd leek het erop dat Carlos Munoz namens Andretti Autosport de eerste plek voor zich op zou gaan eisen.

Aleshin perste er echter een bloedsnelle run uit. Takuma Sato leek vervolgens de voornaamste concurrent voor Aleshin te worden, maar de Japanner liet het liggen. De race op Pocono start vanavond om 21:00 uur. IndyCar-races worden dit jaar live uitgezonden op Ziggo Sport. Daarnaast kan er ook meegekeken worden via het officiële YouTube-kanaal van IndyCar.
