Dixon opent als snelste bij terugkeer op Watkins Glen

Ganassi-coureur Scott Dixon is het IndyCar-weekend op het circuit van Watkins Glen als snelste begonnen. Watkins Glen staat voor het eerst weer op de kalender sinds het seizoen 2010 als vervanger van de geschrapte race in Boston.

Dixon reed ook in de eerste training de snelste tijd. De Nieuw-Zeelander was bijna twee tienden sneller dan Helio Castroneves. Will Power eindigde de dag als derde. De sessie werd meerdere keren onderbroken door rode vlaggen, maar er vonden geen grote incidenten plaats.

Het meest opvallende moment was het stilvallen van Takuma Sato in de pits. De Japanner spinde eerder al een keer, maar viel in de pits stil vanwege een lege brandstoftank. Het veld zat dicht bij elkaar met twintig coureurs binnen twee seconden van elkaar.
