Pagenaud pakt belangrijke pole en bonuspunt voor seizoensafsluiter Sonoma

Simon Pagenaud heeft de pole position gepakt voor de IndyCar-race op Sonoma Raceway. Een belangrijke pole, aangezien komende nacht de strijd om de titel beslist gaat worden. Wordt het Pagenaud of kan Will Power nog een truc uit de hoge hoed toveren. In de race zijn er dubbele punten te verdienen. Pagenaud voert het kampioenschap aan, maar vorig jaar had Montoya dat ook en verloor de Colombiaan de leiding in het kampioenschap op het belangrijkste moment van het seizoen.

Pagenaud kreeg de pole zeker niet cadeau: de Fransman had hevige concurrentie van zijn teamgenoten Helio Castroneves en Juan Pablo Montoya. Castroneves en Montoya starten de race als tweede en derde, met op plaats vier Will Power.

Graham Rahal en Ryan Hunter-Reay waren de snelste mannen met een Honda-motor op de plekken vijf en zes. Grootste tegenvaller van de kwalificatie was drievoudig kampioen Scott Dixon. De Nieuw-Zeelander weet meestal wel door te dringen tot de Fast Six, maar miste het deze keer op 32 duizendste.

De race op Sonoma Raceway begint komende nacht om 00:30 en is live te volgen via het officiële YouTube-kanaal van IndyCar.
