Mogelijk toch meer races voor Montoya

De kans bestaat dat Team Penske komend IndyCar-seizoen bij een aantal races niet vier, maar vijf auto's in zal schrijven. Dan zou Juan Pablo Montoya de eerste gegadigde zijn om die wagen te bemannen. Dat verkondigde Penske-voorzitter Tim Cindric op de app van IndyCar.com.

Montoya raakte deze winter zijn stoeltje bij Team Penske kwijt aan Josef Newgarden, die na een ijzersterk seizoen overkomt van Ed Carpenter Racing en dit jaar fulltime aan de zijde van teamgenoten Helio Castroneves, Will Power en kampioen Simon Pagenaud zal racen.

Penske doet alleen voor de Indy 500 een beroep op Montoya, maar het team overweegt dat programma uit te breiden. Cindric: "Het zou me verbazen als we iets doen voor mei. Als we iets zouden doen, dan zouden we overwegen om de Grand Prix of Indianapolis te doen. Ik denk niet dat we voor mei nog iets gaan doen."
