Dixon snelste op openingsdag IndyCar-seizoen

Chip Ganassi-coureur Scott Dixon heeft de openingsdag van het nieuwe IndyCar-seizoen als snelste afgesloten. De drievoudig kampioen uit Nieuw-Zeeland was in de straten van St.Petersburg bijna drie tienden sneller dan Penske-coureur Will Power.

Maar liefst 25 weken hebben de IndyCar-fans moeten wachten totdat hun helden weer in actie kwamen. De laatste IndyCar-wedstrijd van het seizoen 2016 werd namelijk in september vorig jaar verreden. De training in St.Petersburg werd wel tien minuten ingekort vanwege een rode vlag, veroorzaakt door Takuma Sato.

De oud Formule 1-coureur uit Japan parkeerde zijn Andretti-bolide in de muur in bocht 13. Toen de brokstukken waren opgeruimd ging Dixon er goed voor zitten, maar de drievoudig kampioen wist zijn snelste tijd niet meer te verbeteren. Will Power zal vooral blij zijn dat hij de tweede sessie zonder kleerscheuren door kwam. De Australiër miste een groot deel van de eerste training vanwege een crash. Achter Dixon en Power besloten Tony Kanaan en Charlie Kimball de top vier. Sebastian Bourdais kende ook een goede sessie en besloot de top vijf.

De derde training en kwalificatie worden vanavond verreden. De eerste IndyCar-race van het nieuwe seizoen is morgenavond en start 18:00 uur Nederlandse tijd. Alle sessies van IndyCar zijn live te volgen via het officiële YouTube-kanaal.

Ons Nederlandse trots in Amerika heeft het ook goed gedaan vandaag ! In het voorprogramma van het Indycar weekend heeft Rinus van Kalmthout (Rinus Veekay in Amerika), 2 keer het podium gehaald in de USF2000 klasse (onderdeel van het Road to Indy programma) , en staat momenteel 2de in het kampioenschap !
