Veach vervangt Hildebrand in Alabama

Zach Veach maakt komend weekend zijn debuut in de IndyCar Series. Voor het weekend op Barber Motorsports Park in de staat Alabama neemt hij de honneurs waar voor JR Hildebrand bij Ed Carpenter Racing. Hildebrand brak bij de race in Long Beach zijn hand bij een crash met Mikhail Aleshin en is nog niet in staat om te racen.

"Dit is natuurlijk niet hoe ik gehoopt had dat het zou lopen", aldus Hildebrand. "Ik heb er alles aan gedaan sinds mijn operatie vorige week dinsdag, maar het risico is nog te groot gezien de aanvankelijke ernst van de blessure. Ik vertrouw volledig op het inzicht van mijn artsen en richt mijn vizier nu op de race in Phoenix."

Veach eindigde vorig jaar als derde in de Indy Lights. "Allereerst wil ik JR veel sterkte wensen tijdens zijn herstel. Ik heb een paar jaar geleden zelf mijn hand gebroken en wens niemand zoiets toe. Dit is niet hoe je je debuut wilt maken, maar ik ben het team wel ontzettend dankbaar voor deze kans. Ed Carpenter heeft me een paar maanden geleden al de kans gegeven om voor het eerst te testen met een IndyCar. Het gaat heel speciaal worden voor mij om op Barber weer achter het stuur te mogen kruipen van die bolide. Ik ga veel moeten leren in korte tijd, maar ik kijk er echt naar uit en wil mijn uiterste best doen voor zowel het team als voor JR."
