Newgarden koploper na zege in Mid-Ohio

Josef Newgarden is de nieuwe lijstaanvoerder in de IndyCar Series. De Amerikaan boekte in Mid-Ohio zijn tweede opeenvolgende zege en nam de leidende positie over van Scott Dixon. Newgarden heeft nu 453 punten, Helio Castroneves is tweede met 446 punten en de als negende gefinishte Dixon staat derde met 445 punten.

Newgarden startte als tweede en passeerde Will Power met een mooie actie in de dertiende ronde. Vervolgens reed hij vrijwel de hele wedstrijd aan kop. Newgarden: "Niemand kan iets op deze zege afdingen. We hebben het als team geweldig gedaan. Het was geen toevalstreffer, er kwam geen geluk bij kijken. We hebben de overwinning zelf afgedwongen."

Power kon zijn pole position niet verzilveren en eindigde als tweede. Het laatste plekje op het podium ging naar Graham Rahal. De enige neutralisatie van de dag kwam nadat Ed Jones in 67ste ronde in bocht 9 van de baan was gespind. Daardoor verdween de voorsprong van Newgarden van tien seconden als sneeuw voor de zon, maar na de herstart sloeg hij meteen weer een gaatje.
