Castroneves verruilt de IndyCar voor IMSA

Helio Castroneves is vanaf volgend seizoen niet meer fulltime in de IndyCar Series te bewonderen. De Braziliaan maakt onderdeel uit van de plannen van Team Penske voor het IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar-kampioenschap voor 2018. Castroneves voegt zich bij de eerder bevestigde Juan Pablo Montoya en Dane Cameron.

"Ik ben zo gelukkig geweest dat ik door de jaren heen veel van mijn persoonlijke doelen met Team Penske heb verwezenlijkt", begint hij. "Roger Penske, het team en iedereen bij Acura helpen om dit programma op te bouwen is een nieuwe uitdaging en een geweldige mogelijkheid in mijn carrière. Ik ben trots op alles dat we samen bereikt hebben in de IndyCar."

De 42-jarige Castroneves is wel van plan om in 2018 aan de Indy 500 deel te nemen. "Ik ben enthousiast over de kans om namens Team Penske in de Indy 500 te racen. Dat evenement ligt me na aan het hart en proberen viervoudig winnaar te worden is iets dat ik nog wil bewerkstelligen. We zijn een paar keer dichtbij gekomen en ik weet zeker dat er nog een kans komt om geschiedenis te schrijven."

Castroneves debuteerde in 1998 voor Bettenhausen Racing. Sinds 2000 kwam hij onafgebroken uit voor Team Penske. De Braziliaan heeft dertig overwinningen achter zijn naam staan en eindigde veertien keer in de top vijf van het kampioenschap. De titel won hij nooit, maar hij schreef in 2001, 2002 en 2009 wel de Indy 500 op zijn naam.

  Dan heb je waarschijnlijk gekeken naar de IMSA Porsche GT3 Challenge by Yokohama.
  Ik zal je een korte uitleg geven wat het IMSA programma hedendaags inhoud.
  
  Men heeft het IMSA WeatherTech Championship wat zo een beetje de hoogste klasse is op sportwagen gebied in de USA. Hieronder vallen 3 andere klasses. De IMSA Prototype Challenge by Mazda, de IMSA Porsche GT3 Challenge by Yokohama en de Continental Tyre Sportscar Challenge. Dit is in de States allemaal onder de vlag van IMSA.
  
  IMSA is razend populair in de States, het heeft mooie races, goede fabrikanten en uitstekende coureurs.
  Het WeatherTech Sportscar Championship is op te delen in 4 klasses :
  
  DPI - Daytona Prototype op basis van LMP2 modellen, met eigen motoren en bodykits.
  Prototype Challenge - Open Cockpit sportscars gebruik makend van een Oreca Chassis en standaard Gibson V8 motor
  GT LM - Een fabrikantenkampioenschap volgens de regels die ook in de 24-uur van Le Mans word gebruikt. Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari Risi, Porsche USA, Ford GT Ganassi en BWM Rahal zijn hier de teams
  GT Daytona - Een open kampioenschap voor sportwagens. Hierin rijd 1 zilver/goud coureur met een amateur/brons coureur. Veel competitie, alle fabrikanten ongeveer aanwezig en spannende races.
  
  Mocht je interesse hebben raad ik je aan vanaf Zaterdagmiddag 5 uur te kijken naar de laatste race van het jaar, de Motul Petit Le Mans op Road Atlanta. Live streaming is te vinden op de webste van IMSA IMSA TV. Een 10 uursrace met commentaar van Radio Le Mans. Een absolute aanrader, al is het alleen al omdat Road Atlanta een geweldig mooi circuit is en Jeroen Bleekemolen kans maakt op 2 kampioenschappen. (Het reguliere en het Edurance kampioenschap)
  
  Kortom, een heel leuk kampioenschap. Zal een lange zit zijn, maar je hebt er zeker wat aan als je liefhebber van goede mooie races bent! Veel eventueel kijkplezier!

Persoonlijk denk ik dat hij 2 jaar te lang is doorgegaan in de Indycar. Desalniettmin zal het een groot gemis worden en meteen een einde van een tijdperk. Een tijdperk waarin hij, samen met Kanaan, Hornish Jr. en de Ferran er voor heeft gezorgd dat de Indycar steeds populairder werd. Waarin zij als rijders open stonden voor interactie met fans en daarmee de CART/Champcar World Series minder aantrekkelijk maakte. Een van de rijders die zowel voor de "unification" als er na uitermate succesvol was. En oprecht daarmee een levende legende in het (Amerikaanse) autoracen is. Diep diep respect voor wat hij bereikt heeft. Hopelijk in de IMSA gaat hij mooie successen boeken.
