AJ Foyt Racing legt Kanaan vast voor 2018

Tony Kanaan heeft voor 2018 een contract getekend bij het team van AJ Foyt Racing. De 42-jarige Braziliaan, IndyCar-kampioen in 2004 en Indy 500-winnaar in 2013, kwam de voorbije jaren uit voor Chip Ganassi Racing, maar die renstal gaat voor komend seizoen terug naar twee inschrijvingen.

Voor Kanaan was geen plek meer, maar hij heeft onderdak gevonden bij AJ Foyt Racing. "Twee legendarische namen bundelen de krachten", steekt de Braziliaan van wal. "Zelfs voordat ik in overweging nam om voor zijn team te gaan racen zei AJ Foyt altijd al aardige dingen over me, bijvoorbeeld dat ik in vroeger tijden ook goed zou zijn geweest en dat ik hem herinnerde aan hemzelf toen hij nog actief was. Van zo iemand als AJ Foyt zijn dat wel woorden die tot je doordringen."

Foyt voegt toe: "Wat me zo bevalt aan Tony is dat hij altijd de aanval kiest, of hij nou wint of verliest. De coureurs die we hadden waren goed, begrijp me niet verkeerd, maar Kanaan is toch van een ander niveau. Toen de kans zich aandiende om hem vast te leggen, hebben we die gegrepen. We wilden hem echt hebben. Ik denk dat AJ Foyt Racing daardoor in 2018 wel eens hogere ogen zou kunnen gooien."
