Race in Alabama gestaakt vanwege noodweer

De Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama op Barber Motorsports Park is gisteren na 23 ronden gestaakt vanwege het slechte weer. De wedstrijd wordt vandaag om 12.00 uur lokale tijd hervat. De race gaat in totaal over 90 ronden of maximaal twee uur. Zodra de auto's vandaag onder het groene vod door komen, zijn er 23 ronden verreden en staan er nog 75 minuten op de klok.

Polesitter Josef Newgarden heeft elke ronde tot nu toe aan de leiding gereden en hervat de race dus ook als leider. Barber Motorsports Park heeft aangekondigd de poorten open te gooien voor iedereen die bij het restant van deze wedstrijd aanwezig wil zijn, fans mogen zonder kaartje naar binnen.

"Het is lastig omdat er zoveel mensen hierop afkomen om naar ons te kijken", aldus Newgarden. "We willen een mooie race voorschotelen en er een mooie show van maken, dus dan is het wel moeilijk om de wedstrijd te staken. Maar het was de juiste beslissing."

"Aan het begin van de race waren de omstandigheden nog oké. Je kunt racen met die hoeveelheid regen. Voor de eerste neutralisatie ging het echter harder regenen en op een gegeven moment was het gewoon te veel. Er liepen overal riviertjes over de baan en er lagen plassen. Racen in de regen is geen enkel probleem, dat doen we graag, maar dit was te veel van het goede."
