Claman De Melo waarschijnlijk vervanger Fittipaldi bij DCR

Dale Coyne Racing heeft er een probleem bij nadat Pietro Fittipaldi tijdens de 6 uur van Spa zijn benen gebroken heeft. De Braziliaan had in de komende drie weekeinden de Indy Grand Prix en de Indy 500 moeten rijden voor het team van Dale Coyne.

Het is vanzelfsprekend dat Fittipaldi niet aan racen toe gaat komen, maar DCR moet nog op zoek naar een vervanger voor de jonge Braziliaan, die op Long Beach zijn IndyCar-debuut maakte bij het team. Hij deelt het hele seizoen de bolide met startnummer 19 met Zachary Claman De Melo, die tien van de 17 races op zich neemt. Dat worden er mogelijk meer, want Claman De Melo is in ieder geval voor de Grand Prix of Indianapolis van komend weekend de belangrijkste gegadigde voor het zitje.

Voor de Indy 500 heeft het team ook nog geen keuze gemaakt. Coyne is met meerdere coureurs in gesprek en ook debutant Claman De Melo maakt nog een kans. Hij zal dan nog wel het Rookie Orientation Programme moeten afleggen. Eerder deze maand hebben de overige debutanten dat al met succes gedaan. Mocht hij ook de Indy 500 doen, dan komt er voor de Braziliaan mogelijk op dinsdag 15 mei een kans om dat programma af te ronden.

Claman de Melo zal wel instappen in de Indy GP, maar niet in de Indy 500 vanwege gebrek aan oval ervaring.

Belangrijkste kandidaat lijkt Sebastian Saveedra te zijn met backing van AFS.
