Wickens geopereerd aan ruggengraat na horrorcrash Pocono

Robert Wickens verkeert in stabiele toestand nadat hij gisteren geopereerd is aan zijn ruggengraat na zijn heftige crash tijdens de IndyCar-race op het circuit van Pocono afgelopen zondag. De Canadees vloog op hoge snelheid in de hekken, waarna hij met verschillende verwondingen werd afgevoerd naar een nabijgelegen ziekenhuis.

In een verklaring van de organisatie wordt gesteld dat de operatie succesvol verlopen is. "Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-coureur Robert Wickens onderging een operatie om maandag 20 augustus in het Lehigh Valley Ziekenhuis", zo luidt de verklaring.

"De operatie was bedoeld om een thoracale wervelfractuur te herstellen, die geassocieerd wordt met een verwonding aan het ruggenmerg veroorzaakt door het IndyCar-evenement op de Pocono Raceway op zondag 19 augustus."

"Titanium staven en schroeven zijn tijdens de operatie succesvol in de ruggengraat van Wickens geplaatst en de operatie verliep zonder complicaties. De ernst van de verwondingen aan het ruggenmerg zijn op dit moment nog niet vast te stellen", stelt de verklaring van de organisatie.

"Wickens ondergaat waarschijnlijk verdere operaties voor fracturen in zijn benen en rechterarm", vervolgt de verklaring. "Hij blijft in een stabiele conditie. Verdere informatie wordt geboden wanneer deze beschikbaar is", besluit het verhaal.

Precies mijn gedachte. Ik meost opzoeken wat een thoracale aandoening is, maar dat is dus de ruggengraat er hoogte van de borst. Als ze daar schoreven in gaan draaien, vraag ik me af hoe de zaken eronder eruit zien.

Het was echt een heftige crash.. Ik meende dat er alleen al 18 meter aan hekwerk kapot is gegaan. Wat een impact.

Ik hoop dat Robert goed herstelt en hier geen vervelende complicaties aan overhoudt..

  Beter dan een cervicale, dan was de kans op blijvende schade groter geweest volgens mij.
