Arie Luyendyk Junior viert vandaag zijn 37e verjaardag

Arie Luyendyk Jr. viert vandaag zijn 37e verjaardag. De in 's-Hertogenbosch geboren Amerikaanse Nederlander is de zoon van tweevoudig Indianapolis winnaar Arie Luyendyk en zijn vrouw Mieke.

Luyendyk stond slechts één keer aan de start van een IndyCar-race, op 28 mei 2006 maakte hij voor Luyendyk Racing zijn debuut tijdens de Indianapolis 500. Luyendyk probeerde zich een jaar eerder ook te kwalificeren. Dit ging aanvankelijk lukken tot dat A.J. Foyt Felipe Giaffone belde. Deze stond op dat moment in de Toys'R US met zijn kinderen en vrouw. Giaffone haastte zich naar de Speedway en bumpte Arie Jr. uiteindelijk uit het veld.

Meer succes had Arie Jr. in de Indy Lights. Gedurende enkele jaren was Arie Jr. een frontrunner in deze klasse en behaalde onder andere een tweede, derde en vierde plaats in de kampioenschappen in de jaren '00. Arie Jr. scoorde één overwinning in deze klasse, in 2008 won hij voor AFS Andretti de laatste race op Chicagoland. Tevens was hij verbonden aan het A1GP-team Nederland.

Na zijn single seater-loopbaan stortte hij zich op het racen met Stadium Trucks en is hij een van de bestuurders van de IndyCar-twoseater die elke race tijdens de parade-laps haar opwachting maakt. Luyendyk kreeg in de Verenigde Staten grote naamsbekendheid door zijn aanwezigheid in twee series van het populaire televisie programma "The Bachelor". Hedendaags begeeft Arie Jr. zich in de makelaardij. Wij feliciteren Arie Jr. met zijn 37e verjaardag.

Arie Luyendyk Senior is een held, maar van Junior weet ik eigenlijk weinig tot niets....
Behalve dan dat hij een blauwe maandag aan A1 gp team NL verbonden was..

Het Nederlandse publiek maakte kennis met Nico Hulkenberg, Neel Jani is na een zeer fraaie campagne kampioen geworden en er was op een goed moment sprake van dat ze met Formule-auto's van Ferrari gingen rijden, gebaseerd op de F2004 of de F2007 of met een V8-blok uit de F430 als ik het me goed herinner. Jaartje later had meneer de sjeik er geen zin meer in en was het na een half seizoen gedaan met de klasse, geloof ik. Auto's zijn later nog een keertje opgekocht en ingezet voor een andere klasse, maar hoe die heet en hoe het daarmee is vergaan durf ik niet te zeggen.
  
  Ken je de Superleague Formula nog btw? Met die voetbalteams en (ook) chaotische kalenders? We hebben wat hersenruften voorgeschoteld gekregen in komkommertijd bij RTL5. En die arme Kalff alles recht lullen wat krom was XD

  @Schwantz34 Dennis Retera.... ? De beste man uit Best. Tegenwoordig eigenaar van Retera Racing. Een hartstikke goede kerel die helaas door weinig sponsoring niet erg actief meer is op het circuit.

  Tuurlijk de Superleague Formula! De basis van die klasse vond ik al erg vreemd aangezien ik geen enkele link tussen autosport en voetbal (waar ik zelf werkelijk niets om geef) zag!
  
  Wel zagen de wagens er aardig uit en zorgde een dikke V12 voor een gezellige sound!

  Ik zag de link ook niet, maar die wagens waren idd kick (beetje aan de logge kant wel) en klonken lekker! Als ik me het goed herinner deed onze Bobby D. het overigens niet onverdienstelijk in deze serie :-)
