Fittipaldi richt zich op volledig seizoen in open-wheelklasse in 2019

Pietro Fittipaldi zou een druk jaar hebben in 2018, maar zijn oorspronkelijke plannen werden overhoop gegooid door een zware crash in het WEC. In de komende weken verwacht de Braziliaan volledig herstel van zijn blessures en in 2019 wil hij graag een heel seizoen in een open-wheelklasse rijden.

Op Spa-Francorchamps ging het flink mis voor Fittipaldi. Hij crashte in Eau Rouge en brak daarbij zijn linkerbeen en rechterenkel. Eind juli keerde de 22-jarige coureur terug in de IndyCar Series, maar zijn zitjes in het WEC en de Japanse Super Formula gaf hij op. Dat besluit was mede ingegeven om het herstel van zijn linkerbeen te versnellen. In gesprek met Motorsport.com vertelde Fittipaldi dat hij verwacht dat het herstel nog een week of zes op zich laat wachten.

"Binnen nu en een maand of anderhalf zal ik weer honderd procent zijn en is mijn linkerbeen helemaal geheeld", vertelde Fittipaldi. "Momenteel heb ik nog niets besloten over 2019. Het is een beetje te vroeg om er iets over te zeggen, maar het doel is om een volledig seizoen te racen in een open-wheelklasse in 2019. Ook wil ik de Indy 500 rijden. Dat is een van mijn doelen. Dit jaar kon het niet, maar ik doe het als er volgend jaar een kans is."
