Firestone verlengt contract en blijft tot 2025 exclusieve bandenleverancier IndyCar

De IndyCar Series heeft het lopende contract met bandenleverancier Firestone verlengd. De overeenkomst verbindt de bandenmaker en de raceklasse tot en met 2025 aan elkaar, waarbij Firestone de exclusieve leverancier blijft.

Firestone is al sinds 2000 de exclusieve bandenleverancier van de IndyCar, dat destijds nog door het leven ging als Indy Racing League. De samenwerking tussen de Amerikaanse openwielklasse en het bandenmerk, dat eigendom is van Bridgestone, loopt echter al terug tot 1911. Ray Harroun won destijds de eerste Indy 500 op banden van Firestone. Het contract liep eigenlijk nog tot eind 2020 door, maar nu is dus al gekozen voor een verlenging van die samenwerking met vijf jaar.

Tevens kondigde Firestone aan dat het een nieuwe faciliteit gaat aanleggen nabij Akron, Ohio. IndyCar-president Jay Frye ziet dat als een grote investering in zijn klasse. "Firestone is al lang een geweldige partner van IndyCar en investeert hevig in de klasse met de nieuwe faciliteit in Akron. Deze verlenging reflecteert ook de inzet van Firestone om het vijfjarenplan van de IndyCar vorm te geven."

"Kampioenen vertrouwen al meer dan een eeuw op banden van Firestone", zegt Philip Dobbs van Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations. "Terwijl de IndyCar Series blijft groeien, introduceren wij Firestone aan nieuwe fans en versterken wij onze relatie met de coureurs die de duurzame en betrouwbare Firestone-banden gebruiken."
