Will Power start zondag van pole position tijdens de eerste IndyCar-race ooit op het Circuit Of The Americas. De Australiër was in Austin in kwalificatie sneller dan het Andretti Autosport-duo Alexander Rossi en Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Power scoorde op het COTA zijn tweede pole position in twee kwalificaties in 2019. De coureur van Penske noteerde een 1:46.0177 en daarmee was hij ruim anderhalve tiende sneller dan Rossi, die Power daardoor op de eerste startrij vergezelt. Hunter-Reay noteerde de derde tijd tijdens de Fast Six en gaf drie tienden van een seconde toe op de snelste man.

Twee sterke rookies in Austin

Twee rookies maakten een sterke indruk tijdens de kwalificatie op het COTA, dat sinds 2012 ook jaarlijks de Formule 1 verwelkomt. Colton Herta start de race op zondag als vierde, nadat hij tijdens de tests op het circuit ook al een goede indruk maakte. Felix Rosenqvist zette de goede vorm uit de eerste race van het seizoen door met een vijfde tijd in de kwalificatie. Daarmee was de Zweed net iets sneller dan ervaren Ganassi-teamgenoot en regerend kampioen Scott Dixon.

Kampioenschapsleider Josef Newgarden, die twee weken geleden de race door St. Petersburg won, wist de Fast Six niet te bereiken en moet genoegen nemen met startpositie 7. Wel was hij daarmee sneller dan Penske-teamgenoot Simon Pagenaud, die het eerste deel van de kwalificatie niet overleefde en slechts als 22ste zal starten.

  rare reactie... die autos hebben veel minder downforce dan f1 autos en rijden zonder stuurbekrachtiging... plus het racen is beter dan met f1
