Rosenqvist pakt eerste pole position in IndyCar - Podium van Kalmthout in IndyLights

Ganassi-coureur Felix Rosenqvist heeft zijn eerste pole position in de NTT IndyCar-series behaald door tijdens de Firestone Fast Six Shootout zijn teamgenoot Scott Dixon voor te blijven. Het is de eerste keer dat er een Zweed op pole position zal vertrekken tijdens een IndyCar-race. Op de koude 'road-course' van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway was Rosenqvist uiteindelijk slechts 0.0194 seconden sneller dan Scott Dixon. De gemiddelde snelheid van de Zweedse coureur was 128.597 mph, bijna 100 mph langzamer als op de oval.

De verrassing van de sessie was de Meyer Shank Racing - Schmidt Peterson Motorsport-auto van Jack Harvey. De jonge Brit was nog geen tiende verwijderd van zijn eerste pole position. Het was voor het team de eerste keer dat men in de Firestone Fast Six Shootout actief was. Het was sowieso de dag van de jongere-coureurs op Indianapolis. Colton Herta eindigde als vierde en Ed Jones was een verrassende vijfde. Will Power was opnieuw de snelste Penske-coureur, hij kwalificeerde zich tijdens alle wedstrijden van dit seizoen voor zijn teamgenoten.

Andretti Autosport kende met Ryan Hunter Reay (ziek) en Alexander Rossi een teleurstellende kwalificatie. Beide kanshebbers op de titel zullen als zestiende en zeventiende van start gaan. Marcus Ericsson kwalificeerde zich voor teamgenoot James Hinchcliffe en zal als negende van start gaan.

Rinus van Kalmthout scoort derde podiumplaats

Onze landgenoot Rinus van Kalmthout behaalde op de Road-course van Indianapolis een derde plaats. De coureur van Juncos Racing moest zijn meerdere erkennen in Robert Meginnes en Oliver Askew van Andretti Autosport. De in Hoofddorp woonachtige coureur kent tot op heden een uitstekend seizoen in het IndyLights kampioenschap. Met 114 punten staat hij momenteel tweede in het kampioenschap met negen punten minder dan Oliver Askew. Het lijkt erop dat Askew, Megennis, Van Kalmthout en Claman de Melo dit jaar om de titel gaan strijden.

De titel in de IndyLights kent een aantal enorme voordelen die onder andere bestaat uit het rijden van de Indianapolis 500 in 2020. Vandaag kent de klasse haar tweede race van het weekend, daarna zal het circuit omgebouwd worden naar de oval-configuratie. Op 24 mei zal de Freedom 100 plaatsvinden op de Brickyard. Jarett Andretti (zoon van John Andretti) zal de volgende generatie Andretti zijn die deel zal nemen aan één race op Indianapolis. De Andretti-familie kende tot op heden weinig geluk op de oval, van alle startende Andretti's wist alleen Mario in 1969 de race te winnen.
