IndyCar gaat vanaf 2020 aeroscreen gebruiken als cockpitbescherming

IndyCar heeft een tweede fase aangekondigd van hun plan om de cockpits van de bolides beter te beschermen. Vanaf 2020 zullen alle auto's uitgerust worden met een aeroscreen.

Het project is uitgevoerd door Red Bull Advanced Technologies, dat nauw samengewerkt heeft met IndyCar om een passende oplossing te vinden voor de cockpitbescherming. Eerder deze maand introduceerde de Amerikaanse raceklasse tijdens de IndyCar Grand Prix op Indianapolis nog Advanced Frontal Protection. Dat hulpstuk zal de rest van het lopende seizoen gebruikt worden om de cockpits te beschermen.

Advanced Frontal Protection krijgt opvolger

In 2020 zal het uiterlijk van de bolides echter sterker veranderen, want op dat moment zal de aeroscreen haar intrede doen in de klasse. "De gedeelde inspanning van Red Bull Advanced Technologies, Dallara en IndyCar laat een nietsontziende passie en toewijding voor de veiligheid van coureurs zien", vertelde Jay Frye, de president van de IndyCar Series.

"We willen iedereen bij Red Bull Advanced Technologies graag bedanken voor het ontwikkelen van een ontwerp dat een significante invloed gaat hebben op de evolutie van de veiligheid in de autosport. Dat geldt niet alleen voor de IndyCar Series, maar ook gezien vanuit een globaal perspectief."

Halverwege 2019 eerste tests met aeroscreen

De aeroscreen zal bestaan uit een polycarbonaat scherm met een niet-weerspiegelende coating aan de binnenkant. Ook zit er een warmte-element ingebouwd om te voorkomen dat de aeroscreen beslaat. Tear-offs zullen mogelijk ook een element worden van de tegenhanger van de halo. Al deze zaken zullen geproduceerd worden door derden. De IndyCar heeft tevens bevestigd dat de aeroscreen komende zomer door enkele coureurs getest gaat worden, voor het eind 2019 bij de teams afgeleverd wordt.

"IndyCar heeft altijd vooraan gestaan in de veiligheid voor coureurs", vertelde vijfvoudig kampioen Scott Dixon. "Ze kijken en evalueren constant wat er moet gebeuren. Als je de geschiedenis bekijkt, zie je dat het iets is wat ze in de hele historie al gedaan hebben. De aeroscreen is slechts de laatste ontwikkeling om de IndyCar veiliger te maken voor coureurs."

Kijk! Het ontwerp dat, ondanks de vele voordelen op aerodynamisch en optisch vlak, door de F1 werd afgewezen om vervolgens voor een verschrikkelijke teenslipper te kiezen.

Hoe snel zijn we er uiteindelijk niet aan gewend geraakt, die halo. Vond 'm verschrikkelijk en nu zie ik 'm nauwelijks nog.

  Ik betrap me er ook op dat ik de Halo niet eens meer echt zie. Hetzelfde als met de V6 motoren die me niet eens meer storen.
  Uiteindelijk blijf ik de wagens van rond 1996/1997 het mooiste vinden. Je ziet de helmen van de coureurs duidelijk. Je kan de handbewegingen van buiten de cockpit nog deels zien. De wagens zagen er simpel maar bruut uit. En de V10 kan me nog steeds een orgasme geven.
  Maar feit blijft dat de tijden evolueren. En veiligheid is zo'n ding wat ontzettend grote veranderingen heeft doorgemaakt. De Halo is daar onderdeel van. En de Halo die we nu kennen is versie 1.0. er zal ooit een 2.0 versie komen, die weer esthetisch gezien beter oogt. Of het een vergelijkbaar Aeroscreen wordt, dat is afwachten.
