Simon Pagenaud schreef zondag historie door als eerste Fransman sinds 1914 de Indianapolis 500 op zijn naam te schrijven. De Penske-coureur reed lang aan de leiding van de race en vocht in de slotfase een mooi duel uit met Alexander Rossi, die na zijn zege van 2016 nu genoegen moest nemen met P2.

Het duurde vrij lang voordat de race echt op gang kwam, want pas na 151 ronden werd koploper Pagenaud voor het eerst van de koppositie verdrongen. Dat zou in de spannende slotfase nog vaker gebeuren, maar de winnaar van de IndyCar Grand Prix van twee weken geleden hield het hoofd koel en won dus ook de Indy 500. Achter Rossi werd Takuma Sato, de winnaar van 2017, derde. Een uitgebreide samenvatting van de race is via onderstaande video te zien.
