Dixon wint tweede race in Detroit, verrassende P2 voor Ericsson

Scott Dixon heeft zich op een perfecte manier gerevancheerd voor zijn fout in de eerste race in Detroit door race 2 te winnen. De Ganassi-coureur kwam na 70 ronden eerder aan de finish dan de verrassend sterke Marcus Ericsson en Will Power.

Daar waar de eerste race in Detroit op zaterdag op een opdrogende baan verreden werd, was het zondag droog. Er volgde echter gewoon een chaotische race en dat begon al in de openingsronde. Achterin het veld reden meerdere mensen tegen elkaar aan, waarvan Tony Kanaan het slachtoffer werd. Ook Simon Pagenaud en Patricio O'Ward leken op te moeten geven, maar zij kwamen later in de race nog terug op de baan.

Chaotische race en veel neutralisaties

Bij de eerste ronde pitstops ging het voor Spencer Pigot verkeerd. De Amerikaan wilde de pits insturen, maar Sebastien Bourdais schatte die situatie niet goed in en reed tegen de coureur van Ed Carpenter Racing aan. Bourdais kon door, Pigot was klaar en wederom kwam er een neutralisatie.

De tweede ronde pitstops leverde ook spektakel op. Alexander Rossi en Josef Newgarden hadden hun pitstops al gemaakt, maar James Hinchcliffe kwam voor beide mannen de baan op. Op weg naar bocht 3 wilden Newgarden en Rossi allebei voorbij aan de Canadees, wat uiteindelijk in tranen afliep voor de leider in het kampioenschap. De Penske-coureur verremde zich en kwam in de bandenstapels, terwijl Hinchcliffe na een klein zetje van Rossi meegenomen werd in de crash.

Dixon wint eindsprint van vier ronden

Hinchcliffe kon door en veroorzaakte later in de race nog een neutralisatie, omdat zijn Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-bolide ermee ophield. Laat in de race volgde zelfs nog een rode vlag, nadat Felix Rosenqvist gecrasht was. Daarna volgde nog een eindsprint van vier ronden, die gewonnen werd door Dixon.

Daarachter pakte Ericsson zijn eerste, dikverdiende podiumplaats in de IndyCar na een sterk optreden. Power kende problemen met zijn motor in de openingsfase, maar knokte zich met een goede strategie terug naar P3. Hij bleef in de slotfase Ryan Hunter-Reay, Rossi, Marco Andretti, Graham Rahal, Zach Veach en Dale Coyne-mannen Bourdais en Santino Ferrucci voor.

Ontzettend leuke race gezien. Een mooie afsluiter van het weekend.

  Precies. Er gebeurde genoeg. Veel close racing gezien. En niet onbelangrijk, bij de start is het alles behalve duidelijk wie er gaat winnen.
