De IndyCar-race op de Texas Motor Speedway is gewonnen door Josef Newgarden. De Penske-coureur pakte zijn derde zege van het seizoen door Alexander Rossi in de slotfase af te houden.

Newgarden kwam op kop te liggen door een afwijkende strategie te hanteren. De Amerikaan ging regelmatig naar binnen tijdens neutralisaties en dat stelde hem in staat om na de laatste pitstops de leiding in handen te krijgen. Het lukte Newgarden vervolgens om Rossi in de slotfase voor te blijven. De voormalig Formule 1-coureur kreeg het maar niet voor elkaar om in de eerste bocht, de beste inhaalmogelijkheid, inhaalacties te maken.

Ferrucci en Ericsson maken indruk

Aan de finish was het verschil tussen Newgarden en Rossi minder dan een seconde. Daarachter volgde Graham Rahal op de derde positie, terwijl Santino Ferrucci met P4 zijn beste resultaat ooit in de IndyCar behaalde. Ryan Hunter-Reay werd vijfde, voor Simon Pagenaud en Marcus Ericsson, die zijn tweede plaats in Detroit een sterk vervolg gaf. Sebastien Bourdais, Will Power en Marco Andretti voltooiden de top 10.

Takuma Sato startte de race van pole position, maar zag zijn hoop op een goed resultaat verdwijnen toen hij bij een pitstop een wiel blokkeerde en aan zijn plaats in de pits voorbijschoot. Ook Scott Dixon liep een gevoelige tik op in de strijd om de titel. De Nieuw-Zeelander crashte in de slotfase, nadat een inhaalpoging van Colton Herta mislukte.
