Pagenaud blijft Dixon voor en pakt derde zege van 2019 in Toronto

Simon Pagenaud heeft het enige buitenlandse avontuur van het IndyCar-seizoen 2019 gewonnen. De Penske-coureur bleef na 85 ronden op Exhibition Place in Toronto Scott Dixon nipt voor. Alexander Rossi pakte de derde positie.

De race ging op chaotische wijze van start. Pagenaud behield de leiding, voor Dixon en Felix Rosenqvist, waarna het in de achterhoede fout ging. Will Power zette te enthousiast een inhaalactie in op Graham Rahal en in de daaropvolgende kettingreactie werden ook Ryan Hunter-Reay, Matheus Leist, Marcus Ericsson en Marco Andretti meegenomen. De safety car kwam de baan in, maar wonder boven wonder konden alle coureurs de race voortzetten.

Meteen na de herstart schoof Ed Jones, die zich verrassend op P6 kwalificeerde, door naar de vierde positie door Rossi te passeren. In de daaropvolgende eerste ronde met pitstops wist de Andretti Autosport-coureur Josef Newgarden, de leider in de titelstrijd, van zich af te houden, terwijl hij Jones na de stop weer voorbij ging. Voor Jones ging het van kwaad tot erger, want een botsing met teamgenoot Spencer Pigot zorgde ervoor dat hij ver terugviel.

Achterblijvers brengen spanning terug

Aan het front had Pagenaud intussen een relatief comfortabele voorsprong opgebouwd, maar die verdween als sneeuw voor de zon toen achterblijvers hem in de weg zaten. Dixon kon hem tot op een halve seconde benaderen en zelfs Rossi wist tot op drie seconden te komen. Wijzigingen van posities zouden er echter niet meer komen, waardoor de Franse Penske-coureur zijn derde zege van 2019 pakte.

Rossi verkleinde het gat in de titelstrijd met Newgarden tot vier punten, want de Amerikanen werden derde en vierde. Op P5 volgde de beste rookie van de dag in Felix Rosenqvist, terwijl thuisfavoriet James Hinchcliffe zesde werd. Colton Herta herstelde zich sterk van een slechte kwalificatie en werd zevende, voor Sebastien Bourdais, Graham Rahal en Marco Andretti op P10.

Grappig hoe deze man in 2018 en de eerste helft van 2019 waardeloos presteerde voor een Penske coureur.
Hij wint de indy GP en "hij doet het ineens weer".

Geeft min of meer aan hoe belangrijk het mentale aspect eigenlijk is voor coureurs
