Power graait pole position voor neus Rossi weg op Mid-Ohio

Will Power heeft op overtuigende wijze de pole position gepakt voor de IndyCar-race op Mid-Ohio. De Penske-coureur pakte op het laatste moment de snelste tijd af van Alexander Rossi, maar deed dat wel met vier tienden verschil.

Penske was goed vertegenwoordigd in het laatste deel van de kwalificatie, want naast Power reden ook kampioenschapsleider Josef Newgarden en Simon Pagenaud in die sessie mee. Pagenaud had met nog een minuut te gaan de pole in handen, maar Rossi ging daarna met vier tienden onder die tijd door. Daar bleef het niet bij, want met een 1:05.156 verzekerde Power zich uiteindelijk van de pole position.

Rossi, die eerder op zaterdag een nieuw contract ondertekende bij Andretti Autosport, moest daardoor genoegen nemen met P2, voor het Penske-duo Newgarden en Pagenaud. Op de derde rij nemen Sebastien Bourdais en Felix Rosenqvist plaats.

Een aantal grote namen beleefden een minder goede kwalificatie op Mid-Ohio. Regerend kampioen Scott Dixon wist zich niet te plaatsen voor de Fast Six, waardoor hij genoegen moet nemen met de achtste startpositie. Voormalig kampioen Ryan Hunter-Reay moet genoegen nemen met de tiende startplaats, terwijl Marcus Ericsson niet verder wist te komen dan de twaalfde positie. Daarmee deed hij het beter dan Takuma Sato, die niet eens het eerste deel van de kwalificatie wist te overleven.
