Dixon gekozen voor eerste ronden met nieuwe aeroscreen IndyCar

De nieuwe aeroscreen die vanaf 2020 op de IndyCar-bolides zal zitten, zal in september voor het eerst ingezet worden tijdens een testsessie. Scott Dixon is genomineerd om de testsessies af te werken.

In navolging van vele andere raceklassen met open wielen heeft de IndyCar voor 2020 gekozen voor de introductie van cockpitbescherming. Vorig jaar testte Dixon al een eerste versie van de aeroscreen op het circuit van Phoenix, waarna eerder dit jaar besloten werd om een nieuwe versie van het apparaat op de bolides te zetten in 2020. Deze versie van de aeroscreen is in samenwerking met Red Bull Advanced Technologies ontwikkeld.

Deze versie bevat als extra versteviging ook een halo. Dixon heeft de eerste simulatortests met deze cockpitbescherming al afgewerkt. De eerste fysieke test zal naar verluid in september op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway afgewerkt worden. Als de test naar de zin va Dixon gaat, zullen er nog tests plaatsvinden op Barber Motorsports Park in oktober en mogelijk nog eentje op Sebring.

"Sinds de eerste prototypen ontwikkeld en gedemonstreerd werden in 2016, is het al duidelijk wat de potentie van de aeroscreen is om de veiligheid voor de coureurs te verbeteren in het geval van frontale impacts in het cockpitgebied van de auto", stelt Christian Horner, CEO van Red Bull Advanced Technologies en de teambaas van Red Bull Racing.

"Deze nieuwe samenwerking met IndyCar geeft ons bij Red Bull Advanced Technologies goedkeuring om dat potentieel volledig te ontdekken en een beschermingssysteem te leveren dat serieuze verwondingen voorkomt en misschien levens redt in de belangrijkste Amerikaanse single-seater-klasse. In de komende maanden werken we nauw samen met IndyCar en haar coureurs om de aeroscreen te verfijnen en perfectioneren, en we kijken uit naar het zien van de resultaten in 2020."

Ik denk dat RB dit niet alleen gaat testen voor de veiligheid van de coureurs.
Ze zullen ook graag alvast willen weten hoe ze de aërodynamica aan de auto moeten aanpassen voor het geval dat zo'n scherm straks ook in de F1 wordt toegepast.

  Niet relevant. Het DW12 chassis is zoveel anders dan een Formule 1 chassis, dat er geen waardevolle en representatieve data zal kunnen worden vergaard voor gebruik in de Formule 1.

  Wat je hier op de foto ziet is niet wat er getest gaat worden, dit was de eerste versie die al eens getest is.
